I'm thinking about a career move (well, a change of industry anyhow). Looking to apply for the Manager or Assistant Manager's position(s) at the new Great Portland St store, 'twas just wondering if anyone on here could offer any advice as to the sorts of things they'd be looking for (specific to the bike industry I guess?). Doing my application tomorrow, so any advice would be appreciated ๐
I have management experience (currently manage a travel agency in North London, been doing this for 18 months or so) and I've worked in Retail for 10 years +, so I think I have the general experience they'd be looking for, maybe? I know the pay is rubbish, but at the end of the day so is my current salary, so that's not really an issue for me! I'm just bored in my current role and would like to do something different I guess...
cheers folks, your time is appreciated as always 8)
I know many folks who used to work for them, before they were taken over by Slush and Rubble.
That said, they do seem to run a good show and employ people who actually ride and are willing to share that passion (Unlike a certain other chain of stores...)
To be honest, you sound like you have good retail experience. As long as the hours, the pay and the challenge are up to what you want, go for it! The two real keys of a bike shop, in my experience of running one, is managing the stock that's out on the floor and making sure it looks good and then making sure you have really good spanner monkeys and you keep them busy.
Back when I ran a shop, my mechanic was a thing of wonder. Looked a little like Stressed Eric, but was oh so calm and oh so diligent.
So, get a good spannerman alongside you, get some decent stock on the shelves, see if you can get a girl to work there too (Massively beneficial for the female market) and then go to it!
Good luck!
(Do I get a discount? Huh? Do I?)
cheers CFH, you're a champ ๐ pretty much what I was thinking myself, I've noticed that the best bike shops invariably have the best mechanics, and good tip on the female side of things ๐ If I get the job guv'ner I'll let you know 8)

They did build ma some nice wheels 2 years ago. But why do they try to make Evans look cheap?
Good luck Psychle, it sounds as if you have the right credentials for the job. You'll never make a fortune, but at least you work with things you like.
Anyone else thinking of working in the retail bike trade? I "might" have a vacancy ๐
