Pop BN's birthday coming up, and having previously looked into telescopes, I got completely lost and ended up in that cycle of wanting the next model up, until it got ridiculous.

So I'm thinking that maybe someone here can advise what model would meet requirements?

Any experience appreciated; don't mind second hand suggestion either (providing it's available to buy!).

- Budget £200
- Should be compact & easily stored
- Not a faff to set up or use, easier enjoyment will encourage further use (he needs a hobby!)
- Good results for money, obviously 😀
- Suitable for a total amateur with maybe some scope to do more than just look in the future, maybe attach a camera or something? (although this is a 'would like' rather than a must).

Think that's it!

Thanks for any suggestions.

Rich

EDIT: Don't really want to go down the high powered binocular route, unless overwhelming reasons to do so.

Take a look at the Skywatcher Startravel scopes (maybe the 102 or 120). They're a pretty good compromise on size, price and performance.

spchantier - there are a few people on the Stargazers Lounge forum who do stuff like that. I've only ever used off the shelf optics (Orion Optics).

Thanks JWR, I looked at them and thanks to Google, ended up looking more at the Skywatcher Skyliner 200P...it seems much more simple to use and it looks like he can just plonk it on a table - any thoughts?

Bearing in mind it's for complete amateur that just will want a 'point and look' item as far as is possible.

Thanks, Rich

I've no experience with this scope, but have heard good things about the Skywatcher Dobsonians. The 200P is a fairly large piece of equipment (200mm primary mirror, overall length about 1m). The other thing to consider is that if it's going to be moved around almost all reflector (mirror) telescopes will need collimation (mirror alignment) occasionally. A refractor telescope is a bit easier to just pick up and use.

Gotcha, thanks J. I'll carry looking at the 120 then; still trying to get head around what 'input' is required to use it, wish I could find the manual!
