I seem to have aquired the basic equipment to brew homebrew (thanks to a friend).
There seems to be quite a variety of beer and cider kits out there, any advice as to which are worth trying and which to avoid?
Quite fancy a good summer pale ale or a decent dry cider?
Any tips or good links for a novice would be appreciated:-)

FWIW, I eschew kits and brew from grain. It's very easy, really, and well worth it!
Nope, no-one here does homebrew. ๐
Cider kits???
I forage for apples in autumn, (check verges near a junction, there will most likely be an apple tree there where someone has thrown an apple core ๐ ), press them and put juice in a demi john and then wait 3ish months = cider :p
There has to be a headset press out there that can double up as a cider press...
I'm currently brewing 20 litres of summer ale in my shed. The kits you can buy from Wilkinsons or similar are reasonably good, all in you need a fermentation tub, airlock, pressure barrel and sterilizing tablets.
I've acquired a heat pad which is providing a consistent temperature for my fermentation tub, so much so that the lid of the airlock was fired four feet away thanks to pressure buildup.
It's worth making sure that your pressure barrel is properly sealed. Mine wasn't, so I ended up brewing forty pints of malt vinegar last time round.
