The last one I took to be tested was in 1990-something and apart from chatting with the tester for a few minutes and agreeing that it was indeed a 'nice bike' that was pretty much it.
I imagine things have changed since then.
What kind of things are they hot on these days?

Had mine done recently and it passed with a seriously loud exhaust!!!
It is CE marked but baffle has been removed.
Up until recently it got a cautionary one test cert but not this year
Not sure they are particularly hot on anything as long as its safe to use it should be ok

For the last few years as long as the exhaust hasnt got 'not for road use' stamped on it the noise is down to the testers descretion.
I tend to fit a db killer in mine, just so I am not taking the p**s.
Just make sure that everything on the bike works and you should be OK.

had mine done yesterday, as mentioned exhaust noise can be a sticker. Mine failed on dodgy sidewall on rear tyre, it had been standing on a flat tyre for a while, but I was expecting that. I'd checked it against this before hand;

I've just had the enduro done and i was amazed at how knobbly the tyres were allowed to pass, but the big twin should be a lot easier, but Im glad they are checking everything, pretty thorough job compared to previous years.
To be honest it depends where you take it. I would prefer for a bike to fail and get any items that could cause a problem fixed than ride and discover the problem. They are hot on number plate size (they have a special ruler), exhaust (CE stamped) & lights. I the past we have had notifications on suspension which was a known age weakness which when we got fixed made a huge difference to the handling and riding.

My KTM990 goes through with full on knobblies and an exhaust that sounds like an earthquake.
My KTM 525 goes through with full on knobblies, no speedo, no lights race exhaust etc etc, no problem.
If its fitted in needs to work, if you dont use it in the dark you dont need lights.
I've had small number plates and non-CE stamped exhausts pass without comment. Depends where you go, and probably whether they know you.

this. I had a bike with a race can (clearly not legal but not offensive, it was on an NC30 so had a nice burble). Tester told me not to bother putting the original back on just for the test (which I'd said I was going to do) as he knew I'd only swap it back so why waste everyone's time!
More recently a different tester picked me up for an undersized plate and lack of rear reflector on my current R1, so I now have a standard plate with reflector for MOTs. My undersized isn't mad (5 x 7?) but the original looks like a barn door on most modern waspish rear ends.
I had my KTM Duke 690 done on Friday, I put the baffles in the Akrapovic and pit the correct size number plate on and it passed with flying colours (but felt pretty flat with the baffles in).

Every year without fail- fit the big plate, screw in the exhaust baffle. Watch nice chap at Dalziels almost fall off as he never noticed how raised the back of the bike was. Watch nice chap almost hit the garage roof as he did the horn test and discovered the twin stobels. Then he'd come back over with a clean certificate and say "Crying shame having that plug up it. Take it out and lets hear how it's supposed to sound".
Just an update to say nothing has changed.
We talked about vintage lorries and Escort rallying while he operated the horn and looked at the lights. It took longer to print out the MOT certificate than it did to test the bike.
Refreshing in this day and age to find some things are still the same.
