If so, with the rear seats folded, can you get a MTB in the back without taking the front wheel out? If one fits like this, would two be a squeeze... so to speak...?

Nope. You can do it (just) with a Golf estate though.

Nowhere near. Front wheel off a medium frame and it goes in with one of the handlebars just coming between the seats.

2 bikes inside with front wheel on, I'd say you're looking at something the length of a mondeo estate, might get one in an estate from the class down, but never in a hatch
