Been down at my brother in laws and when you punch in a channel number, all you get is a Blue screen, you go up or down a channel with the up/down buttons and it fixes itself

Google how to do a box reset. That may fix it.
Mine did something similar when it had very low signal level. May be worth checking that.

Yes turned it off at the mains and left it for a few minutes and all seems well now.

Sorry. I meant a planner rebuild. But from the symptoms, box reset is probably a better call.
