Morning...
I've decided that I would like to learn how to do hand engraving, like you get on some guns, as I think it would look great on some of my knives. The only problem is that I have come up against a complete blank when it comes to local courses. So does anyone on here do any and can you give me any pointers?
Cheers

How about pantographing? I've done some of that freehand, can get some very good results.

I've had a go at this, on silver rather than steel, and I have had quite a bit of previous experience in wood engraving/wood cuts which uses similar tools

AllI can say It is a very tricky skill to learn and I haven't got to the point where I would be willing to engrave other peoples' work for fear of mucking it up.
If you are close to That London
http://www.handengravers.co.uk/courses
As far as more local courses are concerned perhaps talk to them or go looking for a silversmithing course and see if the tutor is able to teach engraving on softer materials as a starting point.

Etching the surfaces may be easier?

I looked at the London courses and it's just too expensive to travel. I'm going to have a chat with a couple of local gunsmiths and see what they can suggest. I can use my dremmel pen for engraving but I want a crisp line rather than the rotary tool effect

Done a little bit on a friends rifle a few years ago. Courses are great if you are in the right location and have the money.
First up, the dremel is not what you are after. Start with palm engraving tools as most of the work is about 'feel' when making radius's.

Brownells.co.uk have an ok selection of tools and spares.

Second, read. Then read some more. Then, keep reading.

Third, practice a bit before going for it!

Also, http://www.airgraver.com/ Want one so bad!

Some templates and tips here too http://www.lindsayengraving.com/Hand-Engraving-Tools.htm

I'm going to have a go at making my own hand gravers this week as ive only got stock blades to do, And have a play on some scrap brass... An airgrave would be nice if I get into it. Thanks for the links. Been thinking about doing some transfers to work from. I'll let you know how I get on!

You have a real forge too, you can knock up most of the tools that you will need in an afternoon, unlike the coal fired forge plebs like me!

Well I've spent the last 6 hours playing around with drawings so now feel I have the right ideas for the art work... Next is to play with some tools and see where it gets me so I can do this on the bolster of a potential custom knife....
