trying to sort a mass of jumbled images spread throughout my laptop and found a great program ( photofinder) which seems to find what I want and display nicely without to much crap. However the results it displays are not able to be saved by normal method and it tells you how to do it here scroll down to 3/
the instructions are :
How to back up all photos on your computer
We currently do not have the feature to 'back up all photos' in PhotoFinder, since this feature is built into Widnows (albeit via a command line interface). To back up all of your photos, follow these steps:
On keyboard, press Windows-R (a Run window will pop up)
type "cmd" and press "OK"
Enter this command: xcopy /v/s/e/d C:\*.jpg E:\photobackup\
Where "E" in the command above is the drive letter of the external drive and "photobackup" is the name of a folder on u a to contain all photos on your C drive.

I've tried to follow this by creating a folder on a usb stick and naming it "photobackup" then copy and pasting the command shown above but it doesn't seem to work and I get the result shown below

can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong please.
thanks in advance
Bill

Is E: the correct drive letter for your pendrive?

That command will copy every file on your hard drive with a .jpg extension, including any system files and assorted crap like desktop wallpaper. Is that really what you want? You could do the same thing through the GUI using Search.

Access denied? Is there actually a drive E, with a directory called photobackup?

photobackup is the name of a folder in E:\. Not the name of the drive.

Also check when you plug the drive in it's actually showing up as E:\ could well show up as D:\ or F:\ or G:\ depending on your setup.

Go to "this pc" and see what letter your external HDD has been assigned. Then make a folder in it called photobackup and use the correct drive letter.

Can you type the following into the CMD

wmic logicaldisk list brief > diskinfo.txt

and then copy and paste the contents of diskinfo.txt into this thread (saves you having to take screenshots and upload them).

This will show the drives connected to your PC by writing the info into diskinfo.txt in the directory you ran it from (Most likely C:\Users\bt846).

yes usb is on drive E and the reason I want to copy the results it gives me is that they are far more relevant to what I want than when I use file explorer to search for images( FE shows every little icon etc found which the photofinder doesn't seem to.

tried wmic logicaldisk list brief > diskinfo.txt
seems to have no effect and just comes up with C:\Users\bt846 again

It writes the names of the disk you have attached into a file called diskinfo.txt which you can then open from within C:\Users\bt846 and paste the contents of the file in here. Was to save you having to take screenshots.

But from your previous post it seems you do have E:\ plugged in.

have you tried running the command prompt as administrator? Wondering if it is a permissions error when not being able to create perflogs

running as admin ( windows powershell ) the xcopy /v/s/e/d C:\*.jpg E:\photobackup\ has no effect and it just moves to a blinking cursor.

Not having much luck here!

Actually something has started up ..a long list, so hopefully ....

Cool. Now try opening a command prompt as administrator.

Windows key > Type CMD > Right hand click on cmd.exe and Select "Run as administrator".

then try the xcopy command again.

think that may have been the problem MR hedley ...many thanks.
Out of interest ,I'm the only one who uses my laptop so can I set it so that I'm always logged in as admin so I never get these troubles again?

Excellent news. Glad I could help.

Start > Control Panel > User Accounts > Change account type

Click the user account you want to change.
Click Change the account type.
Select Administrator.
Click the Change Account Type button to complete the task.

Should do the trick.

Not such an issue on a Windows machine. Like you, I run mine as admin all the time.

Wouldn't do it on a nix box though but then it's much easier to just sudo to get anything done.

supposedly being admin at all times makes bad things slightly more likely to happen, doesn't it?

(virus/malware/daft user errors/...)

Personally I do and always have done but...

How often do you get caught out with needing to run apps/commands as administrator?

Perhaps stay as you are and just remember to try running as admin if this sort of thing happens again. Although, if you are anything like me, by the time the same problem crops up I've forgotten how I fixed it.

Windows 10 does seem to have the habit of prompting for admin credentials even when logged on with an admin account. They seem to have adopted that from mac along with other stuff they copy.

That's exactly what that xcopy command will do, it'll copy all those icons and everything. It's nothing to do with anything Photofinder has or hasn't found.

In that case the photofinder program itself must be searching differently as the results are definitely different and not so full of junk ..perhaps it has a limit on minimum file size to avoid all the crap?

Picasa

Let it search...

Move all the found images to a temp folder.

Burn to Dvd or many dvd's.

Or big external drive.

Picasa final version.

That's just UAC (and whether you're prompted to re-enter credentials or just acknowledge it is a security policy setting). It's been around for donkeys years (Vista/Server 2008) and whilst the concept isn't new/unique to Windows it's not adopted/copied from Mac OS.

As explained above, for security reasons, more recent versions of Windows require you to enter admin credentials for some actions, even if you are logged into an administrator account. This is to protect you from malware.
