i know a multifuel stove has a riddling grate to shake the ash through, but could i use smokeless coal in my woodburner as long as i give it a good poke about every now and then to remove the ash build up? It has a lot of slots in the grate the wood normally sits on so ash should fall through ok.

It'll be fine, it just won't necessarily burn very hot as the coal won't be able to draw air up from below.
I sometimes put a bit of coal in with my logs to help it keep burning over night.
ive got a lower air control (ie air up through the grate) as well as a top one, so i could always leave the lower one open? (says in manual just for initial lighting when using wood). Probably wont give such good control though.
I'm getting a bit tired of sourcing / chopping / stacking firewood / waiting for it to dry hence tempted by dirty old coal!
