For the money is anything better, just need something for woodland bivvying, timberline at the most.

Basha = tarp?

If so yes with a poncho / tarp from the local army surplus store (MASH in Gloucester) About £17 IIRC plus some paracord and tent pegs = 500g and big enough to get 2 people under it (with legs sticking out as we had bivvi bags!) or one person in luxury.

Builders merchants can be cheaper and lighter. Condensation if not a decent gap between sheet and bivi bag

I spent most of my twenties "bivvy'ing" up round the world and even without a goretex "bivvybag" I slept very comfortably, but nowadays if I was to sleep out tent-less I would probably team up an ex-army "poncho" (Aussie issue ones were always covetted) with a goretex bivvy bag, just for the warmth and peace of mind with a down bag. But v fond memories of getting the basha up just right - I preferred para-cord to bungees.

For woodland bivvying below the "timberline" (treeline??) a tarp and hammock is what it's all about, no bivvy bag needed. Dead simple, light and fast. Add a midge net if you're in a midgey area and you should still get it all in about the space of a bag of sugar. Best and cheapest bet is to make your own basha/tarp and like aviemoron, use paracord through eyelets for attaching to trees.

Doesnt anyone get wind problems. And I mean wind blowing through, not gastric wind.

not if you pitch it low at your feet and high at the head end and feet into wind. I prefer a lower profile for that reason. Basha and bivvy bag for me.

Basha and hammock user here - I favour the army ones when walking in and not too worried about weight - if going light though look at backpackinglight.co.uk they do a great range of tarps of various sizes - i use the duo tarp which is massive

I like the army poncho,that also doubles as said basha
Plus the hood is designed to go over a helmet

Wear your tent 😆
