Me and the mrs are thinking of going to Mauritius. We usually hire a car and stay in a number of places in order to travel around and see places a bit more. We did this in Corsica and Ibiza and it was great!

Is Mauririus any good to do this? I see the island looks like paradise. What are the locals and the food like? Thinking of going end of June

Any advise/experiences?

Thanks in advance

Wife and I went last year. Stayed at the Maritim hotel.. was the best holiday ever. Food great, people were very friendly everywhere we went. We went in September which isn't the hottest, but it was supposed to be one of the drier months. It does rain a fair bit, but wait 5 mins and it'll probably be sunny again!

.. additional thoughts.
We didn't hire a car, but had a few trips out by tour which were all good. Tea plantation and sugar cane / rum distillery both interesting.
Roads are fine and traffic way easier than the UK so I'd consider a car myself if I went back.
Had an afternoon out on a bike with a guide going around local villages and coastline which was great - loads of stuff you'd miss without some local knowledge.

We went a few years ago with two other couples and hired two villas.
(one for each week). First week was near Grand Bae in the NW , the second near Riviere de Rempart in the NE.
Grand Bae = touristy resort, R d R was much more isolated.
We hired a car and circumnavigated the island.
It truly is an amazing place. The food is an incredible mix of chinese/indian/creole.
Highlights off the top of my head...Port Louis market,Curepipe crater ,dolphin spotting down near Flic en Flac, The street vendors' roti with chilli (x3 everymorning for breakfast 😳 ), pineapple with chili powder, swimming out to the reef. A japanese restuarant in Grand Bae served the best seafood I have ever tasted.
A chinese feast in Port Louis was only spoiled by the host's insistance for us to have sea slug... ha.

We went in April and sat by the pool and on the beach for a full week. Stayed at the One and Only. hotel staff, all locals, were great, food was very good, and drinks were expensive...
