TopTip : Help further your career in acting by honing your communications skills. Start off by ditching the text speak.

Using 'normal' words is really quite easy - go on, give it a go.

I heard that Channel 4 were looking for families with teenagers in the UK to make a documentary about children with learning difficulties. Does that help?

Joining the local drama group, no pay, but experience.
Look for extra work on a soap, good money if you get this gig.

It's like alot of things in life, having to start at the bottom and work your way up.

not a drama queen but when i see the kids who go to the acting schools than it makes me cringe knowing that they have been modelled and molded so they are all the same. i want to be different and be able to have a personality

(if you havnt noticed i have very strong oppinions)

You could paint yourself gold and put on a mini mime festival on the streets of halifax with a hat on the ground.

You could get a job at a themed pub that do that medieval banquet type thing (or similar) the actors have to have an equity card. That is your golden ticket, equity card means agent, adverts, soap operas and upwards.

I think you are confusing "schools of performing arts" like the Italia Conti Stage School, with an acting school like e.g. the Guildford School of Acting which produce actors who do theatre as well as TV or whatever they choose to specialise in. Like any other job you can get qualified and go in that way, or you can try to blag your way in at the bottom and work your way up. Good luck.

I'm not in the least bit angry big-chief-96. And I thought calling me 'grizzlyguts' was uncalled for and hurtful.

But I know exactly what you mean about wanting to be an actor with 'his own personality'........... a bit like John Wayne maybe ?

I'm pretty sure that you need this thing called "a sense of humour" to become a comedian.

And I'm not sure it's something which comes shinning through Big Chief's 'strong personality'.

I only really know the theatre business. You are about to get "Notes"

1 You no longer have to have an equity card or have done shows to get one. Anyone can have an agent. But they like you to make money so they can get their cut!

2 Am dram is one way to gain experience. If you are not prepared to gain any experience this way theatre is not for you. If you don't know your USL from DSR you are screwed. Can you operate a door? Seriously. can you remember which way it opens. actors forget these basic tasks!

3 Life experience - the best actors have lived a bit, travelled, observed. But you don't want too much of your own personality otherwise you will only get one type of job.

4 Do Not Work for Free in a professional show.. Theatre and TV have been relying on this for too long. One or two short jobs for experience but you will get exploited otherwise.

5 If you don't get any work - write your own and prepare to be good at funding applications and finding sponsorship.

6 You can do it part time, a famous scottish panto dame I've worked with was a pipe fitter when he wasn't acting. When he wasn't a dame he was in taggart.

7 Training can take a longtime 3- 4 years, mature students do it as well. You need to be good at Voice, movement, history, fencing, dance, literature, music, singing. The busiest actors can do everything and may direct as they gain experience. Some retrain even if they are already working.

8 You have to do a lot of networking, and finding the right pubs and theatre bars to find your next job.
You could start off with some hard graft in theatre in education, Rural tours, being dead bodies in taggart. (Dawn Steel and the like all did this)

8 Equity minimum is about £350 quid a week. You do get overtime - but a 50 hour production week is not unheard of. The technicians will be doing 60 hours plus.

9 RSAMD, Rose bruford, WCMD and some of the london ones are all pretty similar for acting training. Once you graduate you will probably still have to work in a cafe or call centre though.

10 similar will apply to the film industry. make your own, join a film workshop, make contacts etc.

I reckon it's you SFB - no one as far as I can see, is 'picking' on 13 year olds. Now of course if a 13 year old wants to come along and tell all the big boys how he has 'very strong opinions' and 'i got into the best grammar scwl in calderdale.......my parents rekon that i can manage to do better thn a paper round', then there's a fair chance that he might be brought down a peg or two.

Still, maybe in a year's time when he's 14, he might be as mature as Mentalalex appears to be .....

not really, you just have to know how to deliver a line, lots of comedians don't write their own stuff, just 'perform' it

this thread reminds me of Mr Luke Bradley, back in the day asking manufacturors to send him stuff to 'test and review' on his website 🙂

to 'test and review' on his website

ie smash or break :o)
Young Luke is notorious for his ability to trash things, in fact he may actually be an elemental of destruction.
