I've bought a set of American DVDs from Amazon in the states and was assuming that they'd be Region 1 and expecting them not to play (we're in the process of buying a new DVD player and was going to go for a region free or hackable system). However the DVDs played straight out of the box. There's no region maked on the box, packing or DVDs and I was wondering whether the cheapy supermarket special player we have is region free, or whether the DVDs are Region 0 (playable on any region). If I pop them into my PC's DVD drive is there any software that will tell me what region encoding they have?

Most cheap DVD players are region free.
