I've got a seven year old cat, usually full of life and active. Today she's been pretty quiet since lunchtime, sleeping mostly but in the last few hours has been sick a few times but only throwing up bile. Her third eyelid is partially exposed and she's pretty wobbly on her feet. Currently laying under the spare room radiator, where she never sleeps.

Not sure if we should take her to the overnight vet, regardless of cost, or leave it and see if she's better in the morning.

Any professional advice, or other cat owners experienced the same?

Please keep your, brick, sack, canal type references to yourselves tonight please, or I'll wish evil on your pet of choice.

Ta

Your vet will have a 24 hour emergency number, phone them up for advise. Do not waste your time on a bike forum - your cat sounds pretty ill to me.

vet NOW

we had a cat exhibiting some, but not all, of those symptoms about 2 years ago. Turns out he'd been in an RTA. No broken bones but serious internal bleeding. He didn't survive ๐Ÿ™

Mate had same recently! Unbelievably (and they didn't know) it had licked some flowers he'd bought for the mrs, think it was lilys. Ended up on bloody dialysis!

Could be a bug or something else she'll shake off in a day or two, but to be on the safe side I'd go with what Ernie said and call them now.

Quick update, just back from emergency vet, she's extremely concerned about smudge. No diagnosis yet and have left smudge with them.

Funny how you take the little beggars for granted until you think you might lose them. Bed feels very empty with just me and the missus. Fingers etc crossed...

...have left smudge with them.

Excellent - she is far better off there, where they can keep an eye on her and treat her accordingly, than in your spare room. Good luck.

Fingers crossed for you and the cat mate! my cat lives with my folks because my housemates cat threw an eppi and ran away when I bought him to live with me ๐Ÿ™

She did come back after a couple of days.

Got the call I was dreading this morning, Smudge started having fits in the night and eventually passed away at 0645. Glad we took her to the vet last night because at least she didn't suffer and was in the best place.

Vet reckons that she's somehow managed to drink antifreeze, possibly because some evil bugger has left it out on purpose.

Wife's in tatters and I'm struggling to stop myself having a little tear. RIP Smudge, may all your mice be three legged half blind fatties.....

There was a spate of cat/antifreeze evilness in South Wales a while back. Just a very nasty thing to do.

Really sorry to hear about Smudge.

Shame. All the best from me and my stupid big fat black cat asleep on the chair. Wouldn't swap him for the world.

Ah, sorry to hear that bigG.

Might be worth letting the local RSPCA know? They may have an idea who it is.

Our Liquorice has had extra fuss made of her this morning after reading your post and is now happily destroying an innocent cardboard box.

Sorry to hear about Smudge - take a little time to remember all the funny/daft things that Smudge got up to and the joy that he brought to the family, and the love that he received in return.

Read this thread late last night and it was the first one i checked this morning and i was hoping for a happier ending. Ever so sad, you have my deepest sympathy.

Our cat is tucked away safely inside from the rain sleeping like only she can. My gf would be crushed beyond belief if anything happened to her. Hope your wife copes ok.

2nd the contact the RSPCA thing as if some b@stard out there is poisoning animals they need to be stopped asap.

RIP Smudge.

Sorry to hear your sad news BigG - I too was hoping for a positive update this morning. RIP Smudge.

And definitely follow up with RSPCA.

PS we suddenly lost one of our dogs a couple of weekends ago (16yr old Bert) - absolutely devestated. But time can be a great healer and it's certainly "easier" to deal with now. One thing that's helped more than I expected is having an individual cremation, especially since Bert is now "back home."

its the saddest thing in the world to lose a friend so suddenly.

Its unfortunately not a rare occurence this time of year, a lot of people see the first few rays of sun and start changing oil, antifreeze and the like... Unfortunately they dont take much care when they spill it or dispose of it properly and with something like antifreeze it only takes a cat or dog to walk through it and lick their paws. There are a lot of cases like this in Spring sadly.

Crikey, that didnt go the way i expected it to. Condolences on your cat. Even though i have a cat myself (14yrs) i wouldnt class myself as a cat lover. I would be upset at losing ours (Lucy).

So glad i didnt come in with a great big size nine comment. Best wishes

Lynsey and I just spent some time reading all of your lovely messages, both having a wee bit of a bubble but we know it'll get easier.

We get her remains back on Thursday so planning a decent send off on Friday. At long last Lynsey's realising that all my time spent on the forum isn't entirely wasted.

Cheers all,

G

๐Ÿ™

It might seem small consolation, but it's worth remembering how much worst it would have been if Smudge had lingered for days before passing away. It all happened very quickly - from the time you first noticed something was slightly wrong to when you got her in front of a vet, was only a few hours, so there was nothing more you could have done for her - getting her to the vets an hour earlier for example, clearly wouldn't have helped. And you can't go rushing to the vets every time an animal is just sick.

Worth remembering too, that unlike humans, animals tend not to get distressed when they are ill. In those few short hours when Smudge was ill, she would have been quite unaware that much was wrong. And apart from perhaps when she was actually vomiting, she is unlikely to have felt particularly distressed - you didn't mention in your initial post that she was howling, cats tend to howl when they are in pain or seriously distressed. The emotional distress that you have experienced, is likely to be far greater than anything Smudge experienced.

Finally, don't torment yourself by convincing yourself that someone did her harm - you don't know that. Yes there are some very nasty and cruel people in this world and we sometimes hear or read about them, but they extraordinarily rare, most people are decent human beings who feel compassion and humanity - even if they don't particularly like cats. There is a very high probability that it was just a tragic accident - as suggested by bigdawg in his post. Or as wrightyson points out, lilies are deadly to cats and Smudge might have licked a lily flower left in a pot in someone's garden - you just don't know - cats unfortunately, sometimes do silly things.

Be grateful for the 7 years in which Smudge brighten up your lives. Although I know it's difficult and I know what you're going through ๐Ÿ˜

I am very sorry for the loss, this has really upset me. I am sitting here with my two little fluffy men and would be devastated if anything happened. I guess the pain will eventually subside and you will get back to normal. Good luck mate!

hi mate,HUGE catfan here,i'm not afraid to say i shed a tear for you and your gf when i came across this post tonight,we do love our cats and thats a fact,
something which helped me when we lost one was knowing that you gave them the best life possible and like you say old smudge looked very very content "doing what smudge did best",
you and your gf loved smudge and you did the best for your cat, there are cats who never have such good owners,
my deep sympathies mate,(only cat people knows cats like we do!)

Really sorry for you, it's always awful losing a pet. We lost our Pippin about a month ago, she seemed absolutely fine one day then choking and fighting for breath the next. It turned out she had a massive tumour in her chest cavity, all very sad. She didn't suffer though and it sounds like yours didn't either. I was in the same quandry wondering whether or not to wait and see if things cleared, but I'm glad we took her. We've both absolute cat fans and luckily Pippin's sister Tigger is still going strong.

Sorry for your loss, G. We had one of our cats put to sleep just a few weekends ago; he was sixteen and had a bit of a rough start to life when he lost a front leg at two - but gad failing kidneys, had stopped purring, and his quality of life had rapidly deteriorated.

Am particularly saddened to hear of the circumstances surrounding his untimely end.
