I have a bit of an issue developing that maybe you can help with.
About 12-13 years ago I had a little spare money and bought some shares through the stockbrokers my parents used.
I've paid very little/almost no attention to them over the years as the stock market has obviously been rather poor.
Recently I decided to cash in what I've got (a couple of £k). Feeling like finding out how much I had lost over the years I looked at previous statements from my brokers and I noticed a 'bigger' investment that disappeared off my statements in 2009.
When I questioned the brokers about this they said that they had a note to include the shares in my portfolio from 1999 but they had not been transferred into my nominee account. The shares were redemeed in 2009 without my knowledge (due to a takeover or something) and apparently I should have had a cheque (but not from the brokers) - but I haven't.
Brokers have now gone into their archives and have sent me copies of two letters from them to me suggesting that the shares were re-invested - these were from about 2004.
They also say that because the shares were not in my nominee account they are not responsible for them. I have no record relating to the shares and can't remember were they came from.
So, do my brokers have some responsibility for the whereabouts of these shares or can they wash their hands of them?
No one 😕
