On a virtual training course today, and the webcam sat on top of my monitor is picking up vibrations from my typing and also the noise of my mouse moving across the desk. The desktop is one of those super cheap £5 cardboard matrix Ikea types, so it resonates quite a bit.  The noise seems to be being transmitted up the monitor stand and to the mic - I don't think it's coming through the air - but it might be.

1) If I put this kind of thing on the base of the monitor, is it likely to help?

2) Can I get some kind of mat for the whole desktop?

3) I don't really want a new desk cos it's expense and faff, I had to cut this one to size.

If its vibration then better off moving web cam however desks are a fantastic device for reflecting sound waves. Typing is surprising loud maybe better off getting a cheap headset mic if you are doing lots of talkung

Get two neoprene/fabric mouse mats - one for the mouse, one for the monitor. Check if/where the mouse cable is contacting the desk or monitor. It really shouldn't be necessary to damp/isolate the monitor/camera, so...

...don't hit your keys so hard, or get a better quality keyboard. Use a track pad.

See if you can turn down the mic sensitivity in your settings.

Can I get some kind of mat for the whole desktop?

Obviously. You can also use a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

Okay so we run post production but don't record sound in an environment where there would be noise - but we do have oversize neoprene mouse and keyboard mats to damp stuff down.

Just huge mouse mats really.

Or you could put the webcam on something to dampen the vibrations. Just try some material?

The two need isolating.

All of these things are very obvious and have been tried.  The question is specifically about sound dampening materials, not how to reduce the noise in general.

Neoprene is easy to come by so I might try that thanks rone.

You could have said so and saved me the bother of suggesting them. Mad though how you still get mouse noise with a track pad...

Not really.  Most of the ones I know are fairly obnoxious or difficult individuals.

This isnt terrible advice.

However i'd use a gate rather than do it manually. It woulddepend on wether you find it interferes with speech or just in the quite points.

If you absolutely smash they keyboard getting your mic off the desk to the wall or your head will be far and away more effective. A headset in particular will vastly improve isolation from room noise compared to your voice.

Ifthe desk is light adding weight will help by mass damping.

Get a couple of squash balls, cut them in half and put them under the corners of the monitor to isolate it. Used to be one of the ways of isolating HiFi kit, ought to work for you, think of it as cheap air suspension.

I have a headset, and it's good, but I can't wear it all day.

You must have ignored mine then, which eliminates all vibrations from your hammer like fingers.

Suspend the webcam from a carefully calibrated helium filled balloon which gives it neutral bouyancy.

Be sure to account for differentials in temperature and air pressure.......and keep the window closed.
