Just seen a skip full of decent 2x4 wood offcuts, from a shop refit that is been done local to me, cannot belive what gets thrown away!
This would save me a small wad of cash (which would help at the moment)& have just the project to make good use of it.
Should I ask the shop owner or the contractor for permission to take the wood?
I take its a big no-no not to ask & help yourself?
I hate seeing anything going to waste if it can be reused.

Yes, in all likely hood, they wont mind as long as you don't make a mess.

If there is no one around, I wouldn't worry about it, although it technically belongs to the ones throwing it out, they aren't going to bother.

Worst they can say is no.
just take the stuff and politely explain if questioned.. no-one's going to be upset that you're making more room in their expensive skip..
most people are far too embarrassed and uncomfortable to approach desperate pikey tramps anyway.. ๐
Cool, looks like I will be making a treehouse again this weekend, 30 years after making the last one ๐
Ask - suggest beer or cake.
ask themif they say no then go at night
Might be bit pptomistic expecting beer and cake from them as well but hey you never know
I have asked in the past with no problems, just think its polite to do so, before the yobs come along and set fire to it all.
Agree that some of the stuff that gets 'thrown' is ridiculous, we're in too much of a materialistic, buy, buy and buy more stuff culture.
General advice to our shop-fitters, if they're asked is to say no but don't interfere with anyone that helps themselves as long as they aren't throwing stuff about.
guess they don't want anyone allowing someone to do something that may result in an injury

It's not that - it's the logistics of having to re-home stuff can be time consuming and a real headache when you've got other stuff to be getting on with.
Why not take the stuff to a charity shop or put it up on freecycle molgrips?

Costs money basically. Not their job. Sad but true. Not sure if charity shop would be happy with a vanload of 2x4 offcuts to be honest...
I recently got a new bathroom suite to replace one that was at least 30 years old, horrible sun-faded off-yellow thing. Skipped the throne, and in the time it took remove the washbasin, someone had taken the loo from the skip.
Why?!
Maybe they needed a bog for something where image didn't matter.. a shed or workshop or something.

We do, but it's effort, and when you're being paid to do a job you don't want an extra load of crap. And your boss probably doesn't want to pay you to do it either.
I once worked clearing a grave yard for a week as a student. Came back from luch one day to find a fridge freezer in my skip.
Who drives into a grave yard with a fridge freezer to dump it?
I've never ever been one to bother saving this or that, oh **** it just skip it etc. That is till now, demo'd a coupla buildings over the last month, chucked some steel from a couple of old buildings, bit of rsj from a shed right down to flo tube light fittings in a free skip I managed to source, couldn't believe it when I picked up my bounty of 440 quid!!!! My back yard now looks like a scrap yard with the lead and copper I salvaged ready to weigh in! And when coppers 5100 a ton it soon adds up!!!!
Who drives into a grave yard with a fridge freezer to dump it?
Someone who likes their beers dead cold.
lmfao @ cougar!
