Involved in a data cleanse project which necessitates change within MM module.

Manual data update is tricky involving multiple material movements and is very labour intensive and may be prone to error. Basically even with a dedicated resource estimate a full time job for at least a year.

Would direct table update be an option?

Not a SAP techie, more a business user with 5 years working with SAP
I've been told with authority direct table updates are not recommended in any event

Company I work for use either..Winnshuttle - transaction (google it), LSMW's, or even SAP own GUI scripting tool for mass updates

I have experience of winnshuttle, fairly easy to use...although I understand it's very expensive to buy

I don't have experince of LSMW's - more of a techie's way of performing mass updates AFAIK

the SAP GUI tool is workable but clunky

No Sap would not support this. Any changes need to go via the application layer and coded in ABAP.

You would never do a direct table update.

LSMW would be the best way, it uses standard SAP templates and is very easy to learn.
Its also a tool that once youve used is great when testing.
(I worked for SAP as an MM config/implementation consultant for 8 years - now contracting for the past 7)
Oh and a shopkeeper too. 🙂

Three words that are the mark of duff software - "Save and Release".
