I'm finally getting around to fitting the Ring doorbell I bought last year. I've got it all running and testing it velcroed to the door, but are there any gotchas/issues people have identified before I start drilling into the wall?

I find it generally good but the 'rapid ring' app (if it works with your version) is much faster (i.e. it works if you want to answer when someone presses the doorbell) compared with the full ring app

Thanks, Wifi connection is as good as it's going to get. Rapid Ring downloaded 🙂

Edit: Rapid Ring is a great improvement

Can these things be set to beep, does anyone know? A house down the road somewhere beeps every time a car or pedestrian goes past - doesn't get annoying in the slightest... 🙂

Thanks for the tip on Rapid Ring.

My advice is spend a couple of hours whispering random words at strangers walking past. #lockdownfun

Also, can I change the notification sounds on Windows so it plays this everytime it detects motion?

You might want to Google "ring privacy issues"

The Wi-fi range of them is appalling.
I had to install a repeater directly behind it inside the house.

I had two of their 'stick up' cams fitted last year. They were triggered by anything and everything and low and behold the very night our garage was burgled and bike taken they saw nothing for 9 hours.

Police soco said £30 jammers sold (ironically by their parent company - Amazon) are used to jam them.

Biggest flaw with them is they only work on motion and there's no back end to record like Nest does.

I complained to Ring and in true Amazon fashion they washed their hands of it and stonewalled me.

Took them back for refund and fitted Nest which has been faultless and has better camera quality.

Instead of - so notifications enabled for rapid ring only - and only use full fat ring app for settings, although only issue with rapid ring is it doesn’t tell you if the battery is low (only applies if using it on battery, obvs) so check ring app every so often.
