Luckily I bought a pair of autosocks last month and my brother has had to use them in haste this morning. He said they are a revelation! Cars spinning everywhere in cheltenham and his is fine with the autosocks on.
Subsequently he wants a set as we're supposed to be going to bangor over xmas.
Apparently they are stocked in vauxhall dealers but surprisingly the one's i called are out of stock.
Anyone know if any retail places sell these or something similar?
I've tried & failed to find any 'real' shops that sell them.
I've ordered some from http://www.roofbox.co.uk/, who were the only online supplier that seemed to have any stock at all, let alone in the size I needed. Whether they turn up is another thing altogether, though...
Just got the last two pairs from the Vauxhall garage in Cambridge...
They seem to be rather popular!!

Michelin Easy grip are worth trying to get, a cross between snow chains and snow socks.
Got ours from Roofbox Co last week.
nylon webbing wrapped round the driven tyres worked really well for me last year as a get home measure. £8 from B&Q
http://www.autosave-scotland.co.uk/ has something similar.
Might leave it for this winter but order some once things have thawed and be prepared for next years "once every 30 year" winter for the third year running.
I got mine from Roofbox but it was about a week and half before they arrived. That was in the midst of the snow issues a couple of weeks back though, so delivery was always going to be slow.
Just been out and fitted them to my car. Our car-park and approach roads to the office hadn't been cleared and while that was fine on the way in that was because it's all slightly downhill. Tried my Merc without the autosocks on and there was no way it was getting out of my parking space without a fair amount of digging (what little snowplowing there has been just built up a ridge of snow behind it). With the autosocks fitted then getting it out was no problem at all.
Roofbox for me, took 2 days to get here.
