Avoid garmin. We bought one when our Tom Tom packed up, as it came top in the Which? tests, but we hate it. The mapping is rubbish, very hard to interpret without staring at the bloody thing, instead of the road, and the directions are unclear and badly timed.

Mrs lactic, who uses it most, has ordered me to buy another Tom Tom.

I've got a TomTom One XL and it's been fine. Just be very , very careful when updating it and make sure you don't ever disconnect it from the PC without properly closing it in software first as it's quite easy to bollx it up!

I have tried garmin and TomTom and I much prefered the TomTom. Easier to use and easier to follow.

Just my opnion though.

+1 for TomTom ... One IQ Routes is very easy to use.

Otherwise, if you have an iPhone, Co-pilot is good and cheap - I have used it on mine extensively over the past year and it only let me down briefly once when it froze.
