People who have never owned such a car will tell you it's unreliable and gets poor mpg compared to their VRS.

Twice by now?

I had the 1.9JTDM 147. Would never have sold it, but unfortunately it was written off by some divot who didn't know how stop lines work. Got a Giulietta now, but still miss the 147, it had a bit more "Alfaness" about it. 🙁

I had a 156 with 130k on it. Great car and totally reliable. Twinspark motor though

Piston Heads have a 147 as their Shed of the Week. If buy one for sure.

Cam belt done at either 70 or 80.

Cambelt needs to be done on a mileage and age basis on these.

I've got a 1.9jtdm GT, so virtually the same car as the 147.

If it's got lots of history then no reason not to buy it over anything else, IMO.

The engines are generally reliable, the EGR's coke up, but then that's what EGR's do. Easy to clean / replace.

The suspension is made of chocolate, but that'll not leave you stranded at the side of the road.

Make sure it's got leather. Alfas must have leather 😉

Has it 12 months MOT and costs less than a grand - if so probably worth a punt.

It so happens that we have a 147 for sale. Thus may I suggest that this would be a better route to all that is good in Alfaness - Our 147

It doesn't drive like an Alfa. Had a extended test drive in one and was really disappointed. Every other Alfa I've driven instantly put a smile on my face. They just drive right. 147 didn't. Plus it's a bit cramped inside. And the gear shift isn't very smooth. I personally wouldn't buy one.
Sorry!

I had a 147 Lusso for a year or so and it was excellent. Very well designed interior and a real joy to drive. I would get another. Issues to watch are the cam belt as discussed and suspension. My was a little squeaky and although I had the dwishbones replaced it never really cured it. If I was to buy again I would have it given a once over by an Alfa garage before I bought it.

Great little cars. We have had two, the last beIng the Q2 model that was also remapped.

The handling scared me though as I always felt you were on the edge. Brakes always seemed a little lacking for the performance.

50mpg on a run but expect to get high 30's if only used around town.

Replaced with a 6 cylinder German car which is in a different league but it did cost twice as much.

Love my 147 1.9 JTD. Mine is an 04 plate, 88K on the clock and has never given me any problems. In the motorway get at least 55 mpg and combined around 49 mpg.

Only advisories it has ever had on its MOT is for tyres and it failed last time due to an missing side repeater.

mechanically its been sound and I love it.

No reason to get rid until it dies.

Things to watch for - upper wishbones on the front will probably need doing. The bushes wear relatively quickly and the cost is about £200. Also the front anti roll bar may be knocking. Mine has since I bought it but it doesn't affect anything its just noisy.

As above cambelts must be done on schedule as must servicing. Alfa's do not like going so much as 500 miles past their service intervals (petrol more so than diesels but still don't push it).

Check out alfaowner.com - solid Alfa resource.
