Just wanting to check our plumber isn't fleecing us - Worcester-Bosch 30Si with remote (wireless) programmable thermostat to replace existing combi boiler so no new piping needed apart from POSSIBLY a short run of gas pipe if the existing gas feed is too narrow a gauge (only about 6ft). Minimal prep work needed - just remove old and fit new...

I'm just having a whole new system put in, and all 3 people we got to quote said a WB would be about £1,300, obviously they would probably charge a days labour on top which Bradford appears to be about £150 a day at the min.

Why not just get another quote from some one else ??

I was trying to get that 'quote' from here. I probably will get another quote if this one comes in too expensive.

Yeah I was hoping circa £1600 > £2000 so I think any more than that and I get a competitive quote in.

Can anyone recommend a plumber that works in Harrogate?

I had one done last Thurs, £1120 fitted inc VAT. Was a Glowworm though, W-B could be about £250-£300 more. My guys could probably be persuaded to come up as far as Harrogate, Doncaster based.

We had a new WB condensing boiler, rerouting of pipework inc. new gas pipe, new TRVs throughout (6no.) and wireless thermostat for about £2k in Sheffield two years ago.

Gloworm are excellent value, a 30kw can be had for about 470 inc vat. Avoid potterton, WB are overpriced for what you get and trade on the name. Vailant are pennies different and far superior imo.
I'd expect 300 labour and commissioning etc and the cost of the boiler to be about 900. Check ebay and boilers2go, cheapboilers.co.uk for prices.

And between 40 and 100 for a fancy wireless roomstat.
Again, check ebay for these. Good prices, honeywell are very good, but dear.

Standard quote in (South) London appears to be about £3k for a boiler, fitted. I'd welcome a recommendation of someone who'll do a good job for a better price - that looks like about 2k labour to me and i don't believe it's that big a job.

I could ask the guy who is currently doing ours (Baildon), if he will work in Harrogate (he's based in Rawdon)

We have been having quotes for everything house wise recently has we are doing a complete renovation project. If we had gone for the first quote we would have ended up paying more, and more valuably they all gave very helpful info on the best way to do things.

We ended up going for a Vaillant as £300 cheaper than WB and according to a couple of the guys who quoted us, and just as good.

Remote thermostats are great and make your heating bills less! http://www.avenuesupplies.co.uk/index.php?id=876&pid=6153&sid=1 I've fitted this on to 2 boilers now and got them both off ebay for £50 or so

MF - your 1600 - 2000 is about right I would think. I'm not from round your way, think prices may be cheaper up there than down here in sunny Kent. Ive just done a small Worcester combi for around the 1600 mark, was pretty simple install, except the condensate pipework which required a long run of waste pipe. From my experience Worcester and Vailant are the market leader, the reason I use Worcester is good customer support, easy to get hold of technical help (once spent 2 days trying Vailant, but that was a couple of years ago!), good website with loads of information and the availability of spares.

Simons - where are you in London, 3K seems far too steep?

Only having the 'fancy ' remote pad as the cable routing would be a pain - would rather spend the money.

Why does it make me shudder to spend this much on a boiler when my bike cost more 😉

Bear - we're in Brixton. A friend paid that a couple of years back for a small combi in a flat after getting a few quotes and we've been quoted about the same. The boiler in our current place is a Keston (Advice - never, ever, buy a Keston boiler) and it's been nothing but trouble since we moved in.

Simon - nearly worth my while coming into Brixton for 3K!

Have you got a Keston Combi? And did they use a Keston because you've got a long flue route?

we had one put in a couple of years back. Removed the old one from the airing cupboard and put the new one in the loft. Quite a bit of new pipework. 27l wireless (WB I think). Cheapest quote was £2500. Better than the £4k British Gas wanted. Not only that be we now get junk mail from British Gas every year trying to sell us a new boiler. Like it's going to take 3 years to make our mind up on a £4k quote!

Besides, the muppet that came around measured the flow rate on the bathroom cold tap so got a lovely idea of how quickly the tank in the loft would empty!

Bear - can't find out how to PM you. Mail me at simon @ nicolai-uk.com

Keston is a condensing boiler but not a combi that vents straight out of the wall it's mounted on so no unusual flue. It's had a new logic board and a new fan (a large, expensive part) in the last five years. The replacement fan failed within 12 months of being fitted and whilst Keston were happy to replace the part again they wanted us to pay the labour!.

What's best about Keston is that almost most plumbers won't touch them and they themselves "only do warranty work". When we have paid for them to service it something has usually failed within a couple of months. We've decided we're doing nothing to it now until it fails when we'll replace (hence wanting to line someone up to do it).

Simons_nicolai_Uk - Have you tried RJS Plumbing based in Plumstead? May not come as far as Brixton but they are very good and value for money if they do. We had a Vokera boiler and five rads in our flat for £2K inc labour a few years ago.
