Spotted a lovely looking moth in the pub this evening. The picture didn't do it justice or capture the colours well.
A quick Google and the only similar one I've found is the Crimson Speckled Moth (Utetheisa pulchella) but this would seem to be pretty unusual in the North East of England as they are native to N. Africa and the Med.
Can anyone identify it?
Dunno, but I've seen 'em in Wales.
Looks like an Abraxas grossulariata or The Magpie to me.
This sight is very good.

You can do a keyword search and it has good clear immages.
The OP's I'm certain is a Magpie moth. When I was a kid I used to hunt for Privet Hawk moth caterpillars and keep them until they hatched. Brilliant watching them break out of the crysalis, and their wings infurl.
Thanks guys, appreciate that.
