It is possible to know the recipe without needing to be Jamaican. Just sayin' 🙂 , but no I'm not and I don't.

If anyone could tell me where I could get purchase Jamaican hard dough bread in Warwickshire I'd also be incredibly grateful! My best mate when I was a kid had Jamaican parents, food at her house was ace. They used to get in extra loaves if I stayed the weekend, I was addicted to that bread. 😐

Met a couple of white Jamaicans on an exchange year at Manchester University in 2002.

They were good guys, dressed very preppy in chinos, Tims and and Ralph Lauren polo shirts...at first we thought they were ex-public schoolboys engaging in 'epic bant' :p

Ernie- my parents christened me, I had no choice really at that age. When I registered with STW I chose to use my actual name. Over the years I've had a lot of people make glib comments re: custard and also rice pudding. Is that the best you've got? Shame.

As for a definative recipe- there isn't one really- a bit like the recipe for Shephard's/ Cottage Pie here in the UK. My recipe is exactly that- mine. As mentioned above, there are many recipes and mine is different to my brother's and my sis' one. But all of them came from out mother.

Ambrose; does your mum do those little salty fishcakes? My mate's mum's from St Lucia, so I don't know if it's a delicacy specific to there, but by God they are amazing. Need to drink gallons of water though.

The first time I ever tried proper Jamaican cooking was in a nightclub.

An old fella called Reggie, had convinced the club to allow him to use their kitchen for one night, during a jungle night put on by another friend.

So in among a hundred or so sweaty ravers, was Reggie, serving goat curry, pates, jerk chicken, rice and peas and some sort of sweet.

Sadly it was only a one off event.

And I'll tell you something Ambrose, for the last couple of weeks I've been working on site paired up with my mate who is Jamaican (I got him the job) We spend the day taking the piss out of each other.....can't wait to tell him about this thread

It's an interesting dish, something which looks like it would be crap, but when eaten is really nice, unless it's from a package then it's usually crap.

IMHO growing up/living in the UK he has recieved a lot of "banter " aimed at him where he had to be a good sport and be the but of other peoples jokes. This has left him P off [as we all would be]and sensitive to such banter. Clearly ernie is not a racist - as shown by his willingness to even use his banter universally against all [you wil not be the first or the last to be p off witrh it either]

For what it's worth, in this over sensitive mine-field (seriously, all of you get over yourselves), I just chuck a load of [url= http://www.schwartz.co.uk/productdetail.cfm?ID=5176 ]this[/url] on some chicken drumsticks and legs, get it well covered, leave it for a few hours then stick it in't oven. And shit me, it is tasty.

I'm from Manchester. My Manchester Tart is appalling, although my Eccles cakes aren't too bad.
I do a nice Cottage Pie as well, and I've never even been Cottaging. 🙂

I've heard some bollox in my time, but accusing someone of being racist because they infer/tease that someone is white, takes some beating.

As far as Ambrose's question was I "trolling", look at the facts : bravohotel for reasons best known to himself, decided to post a fascinating but utterly irrelevant comment that he had once met "a couple of white Jamaicans".

Quite what this has to do with the recipe for jerk chicken, I have absolutely no idea. Bemused, I asked bravohotel whether the white Jamaicans had known how to cook jerk chicken, and also more importantly, whether they had rhythm. Was I being "serious", erm, no.......these were not serious questions. Call it [i]trolling[/i] ..... if you so wish.

Teasing Ambrose about being a white Jamaican, was in response to him [i]teasing everyone[/i] about not 'spilling the beans' on the jerk chicken recipe. How this somehow got translated into suggestions of racism, is quite frankly beyond me ........I guess tails was lucky to get away with asking "any Jamaicans on here?" without accusations of being a racist.

FWIW; I played cricket for many years with a white West Indian of Irish decent. He made a decent jerk chicken, couldn't dance for toffee, and clearly had inherited his 'intellect' from the emerald isle, he was utterly mad once he'd had a guinness with a rum chaser.

A mate of mine worked in a garage in Clapton, Hackney, that was run by West Indians. There was a White bloke working there, had the broadest Jamaican accent you can imagine. At times indecipherable to my little Cockney ears. Thing is, he was born and bred in JA, whereas most of the other blokes, who would affect the accent when in the garage were mostly London-born lads. The closest any of them had been 'back-a-yard' was on holiday.
