been trying to set up a work phone to receive emails, all's fine,

however, is there a way to open and delete emails on an iphone but not on the ms exchange server?
i.e. the emails appear unread and are not deleted on the main point of email use, which is a desktop PC

The iPhone uses exchange sync services from exchange server so it will do just that sync whats been opened and what hasn't I think. I can't think of why you would want that?

Yes. In fact it is the default setting that the iPhone leaves messages on the server, apparently!

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3228

Basically, if your iPhone leaves the messages on the server, they will still be there for the pc to pick up. When your pc picks them up, they are gone from the server.

That said, I agree with sj, it is an odd way to do things... IMAP may be better for you, except that the Microsoft implementation is dreadful!

that's the whole point of it innit..

You could maybe use POP3 or something instead - but its nowhere near as good.

Edit - beaten by markie..

As dh says, you could configure the Exchange server to accept POP3 and use that.

Haven't actually tried it - most folk usually want their emails to be in sync.

Yeah. What you've described there is ostensibly POP3 email rather than an "Exchange" account.

Quite why you'd want to is anyone's guess, but that's the way you'd do it.
