Video just to give an idea of the differences in sound. Sounds normal when clutch pedal is pressed, rattles like **** when I take my foot off the pedal. Sounds also goes if I rev the engine.
Mechanic had the gearbox out, changed the clutch throw out bearing and rebuilt the transfer case, then put everything back together and said it was actually the gearbox needed changing. I'm not so sure, because I think he was just a bit fed up of my daily phone calls asking how long it would take after the 3rd week of him having it.
Is that a "jeep" or a 4 cyl diesel land rover
Clutch spring rattle is quite common at idle.
dont think the sound goes on reving, you just cant hear it over the other engine noises. Thrust bearing, but it sounds like that may have been done.

Sounds like release bearing or clutch springs as suggested. If the gearbox has been out both of these should have at least been checked, if not replaced, often worth doing the clutch if the box is out anyway.

also, it occasionally makes a horrid metallic whirring noise. I've narrowed this down to a flywheel on its way out. Could that be related?
Mini Ox is doing magic thanks. Only one kidney after all the stress, and the specialist is now deciding whether the duff one needs removing. He pisses like a racehorse though, so there's no worries about his renal function.
I guess thats better than their usual mode of failure 🙂
Since most cherokees rusted to death quite quickly..... Surely finding a used box in a scrappers or from a breakers with warrenty + flywheel an having that fitted is a better idea than throwing money at your mechanc to chase his tail?
That's the thing trail_rat. Don't want to spunk £150+ fitting on a 2nd hand gearbox that might fail again in 500 miles if it's a £40 part I can fit myself. If it's engine related I can do it, but I've been willfully ignorant of gearboxes and clutches since I started working on my cars and it's finally bit me on the ass.
Sounds like the dual mass flywheel/clutch. my Sharan sounded the same and the noise would go when the clutch was depressed. just had both changed noise has now gone. Mine also used to juddered slightly at a stand still when in gear.
yep dual mass is well outwith my remit - i only mess with old style heavy ass clutches ....
doubt its the spring rattle in a Dual mass clutch system..... its probably about to die a horrible and expensive death ime of dual mass systems.

+1, had similar but more noisy on my Tucson, replaced flywheel/clutch and all normal.
well apart from my wallet which was £1k lighter.
So it's good news then.....
I think I could just about do the flywheel myself, so here's hoping that solves it. Cheers for the input.

Does the jeep have a dual mass flywheel? It's proper old school engineering. Leaf-sprung suspension, engine actually intended for use as a generator, that kind of thing.
try joining an owners forum they will tell you but my limited research says that JEEPS V8 models have had the same clutch since 1974.
2001 seems to be the turning point for them doing a model change for the first time since 1995 so i would doubt it has a DMF UNLESS it is the new model - in which case i havnt a clue :d
