who can identify these guys, seen today making a very high pitched hum from their wings whislt mating

It's a hypno wasp.. whilst the male puts you in a trance with it's wing drone noise.. the female lays eggs in your brain with her extending abdomen through your ear canal.
Quite rare.

I ain't no entomologist, but that looks like some kind of robber fly.
