We will be in touch
Just been to the dentist, complaining of hot/cold making this set of teeth ache. Just wondering what your diagnosis would be from the photo...

Not a dentist ... but once suffered the mother of all pain - toothache for a week plus.
Let it settle for a day or two but if the toothache becomes worst then go back immediately otherwise you might have to loose it.
Difficult to say but the second from the rear looks a bit like mine ...
I lost my second one from the top rear because I waited too long - more than two weeks for an appointment ... then the dentist "disturbed" the bad nerves etc and I was in agony for I think a week plus. Ended up going private. Expensive but good. Some say very good. Top in certain aspect.
not a dentist, but is it the greyness on the 2nd-last tooth? it looks like mine that is dead.
I take it the dentist did an X-ray?
I had a root canal job on one and apparently when they are dead the greyness can show through more.
have you had anything similar on that tooth? if not, it may well be going all nasty and dead inside (I hope not for your sake- root canal work can be costly and a bit harrowing).
if not, floss around it big time or use inter-dental brushes as sometimes this can deal with pain.
if symptoms persist, consult your physician
No, no X-ray. Pretty much all he had to go on was looking in and seeing what's in the photo.
It's OK, I'm booked in next week to have it sorted. I was just interested to see if another dentist would say the same as mine.
I'm interested from a engineering point of view as much as anything, and love the fact that he can take pictures and email them to me. When are LBS's going to be up to speed with that as an idea.
Sensodyne
Sensodyne +1
After years of no real problems in this area whatsoever, my teeth started aching with hot and cold things. Sensodyne fixed it right up. Brilliant stuff.
Thanks for the Sensodyne suggestions. Not sure that's going to be enough in this case. I think poly filler would be more use!
Eat warm things.
HTH.
Some anti inflammatories would work to ease the pain.
The greyness in the first molar is probably because of the old amalgam rather than any problem.
I'd be looking for a fracture possibly of the back of the back tooth (7). You could only be sure by getting the fillings out and looking underneath. X-rays wouldn't tell you much (probably).
Interested to know what he suggested.
Used to be a dentist, gave up last year to do something more interesting and less hard work 🙂
Can't diagnose from photo, need proper history then some diagnostic tests.
Whats worse hot or cold?
\how long does pain last after hot or cold hits it?
Does it come on without heat?
Sore on biting?
Based on that I would then test the teeth with hot and cold
Diagnosis and treatment to follow.
yup can't diagnose from a photo, i'd need to put you under and then stick my finger up your arse.
at least thats how my old dentist used to roll......
Try biting on some silver foil.............
Dentist suggest that this is the problem, the right hand side of the tooth on the left. He reckons the filling has pushed it outwards, and effectively broken it away from the main tooth. Hurts in hot/cold as the filling expands/contracts pushing on the fracture.
Out of interest Crewlie, what did you leave dentistry to be?
Backeinireland, cold worse, but not by much. Also happens just when biting on it, but not all the time. Tends to come on for a day, then goes for a day or two.
Cheers everyone. He's promised to take an after piccy, I'll post it up!

Probably just refill, preferably with a white filling depending on what is found.
If nerve exposed on doing filling then its root canal and if doesn't settle after filling then root canal as well
I'm not a dentist, but how the hell did you get a camera in your mouth to take the pics?
Endoscope?
Cant give a full diagnosis without X rays and tests, but you almost certainly have a fair bit of decay under that filling (the 2nd one in). This has led to the back of the tooth fracturing. Going by the fact that the tooth is symptomatic, I'd guess that the decay is pretty close to the nerve (pulp) of the tooth. The ache you get following hot/cold stimulus is due to the nerve reacting, not due to the filling expanding. Pain on biting is either from the fractured bit of tooth at the back or the undermined filling pushing into the decayed (soft) tooth.
Need to get the filling / caries out and have a look. Tooth may well need a root canal, especially if the ache lasts longer than 30 minutes, starts spontaneously or wakes you up at night.
If the tooth does end up having a root canal, get it crowned to reduce the risk of it splitting.
Tell your dentist to dry your teeth before taking pictures with the intraoral camera - teeth look a lot clearer without saliva on them 😉
