Coming round to the season to plant up a small coppice I want to manage for firewood (and possible charcoal production). Looking to plant unrooted whips in December.
I have a keuper marl clay field (only very slightly acidic, its basically a mudstone). The ground can get quite wet in winter, but that is just water-logging of the thin surface soil on top of the waterproof clay. It doesnt flood. Flat site, lots of sunlight, no tree cover.
Any willow, ash or hazel varieties you can recommend? Im hoping to plant some 6' unrooted whips. Any online suppliers that have tuned out good?
cheers
I got some willow whips from World of Willow (good name). Also lots of advice. They started growing ok, but the dry spring, and only being able to water them once a week, meant they haven't done too well. I'm planning on trying again next year.

Have you considered Alder? Better for wet conditions, grows like a weed and makes the best charcoal.
hadnt looked at alder. will do some research.
cheers for the name rich.
Following the recommendation of folk around me, I've had excellent bare-root stock from Murray Maclean in Oxfordshire.
