I'm trying to sort a replacement laptop for my inlaws.
Budget around £3-400. Mainly used for photo storage and internet access so doesn't need to be lightening fast. I've looked at some Acer models (V5-572, E1-572) but the build quality seems pretty shoddy. I realise I'm not going to get much better for the price but thought I'd open it up here and see what folk have got.
Am looking for one for my sons college work just now, given that it'll just be for typing and internet, I'd hoped something like this would fit the bill. £220....
Was planning on asking the same question as yourself tonight as I haven't much knowledge on laptops.
Well worth looking here

Good spec for the price, no bloatware and you can have windows 7 if you prefer it to 8
I'd look at the Dell outlet store: nearly new / ex demo stuff at a proper discount and almost as importantly - decent backup.
I got an i5 xps 14 recently for £400. The site gets updated daily (afternoon) and there's usually nothing left by the weekend so you need to be kind of patient for stuff to turn up. And then be really quick to actually buy what suits.
Hilldodger: as regards that £220 HP: that processor will appear prettly sluggish with W8.1. Well according to this anyway:

Interesting! Have you used them Hilldodger?
Good point couldashouldawoulda - I forgot about the outlet store
or these. used them for work any very good,
refurbed laptop that is.
I've been thinking of asking the same question too.
This looks cheap to me, is it any good? £200 from Tesco
Fbk - we use them at work for desktops and have had no problems, our "IT guys" all get their laptops for personal use from them as well.
But I haven't used them as a personal customer.
