Help!
I have an 04 citroen relay with the remote flip type transponder key.
Went to start it yesterday and the ignition barrel was stuck, gave it a bit of persuasion because I was in a hurry and the bugger broke! It's only the key blade that has come away from the fob and it's not jammed in the barrel or anything.
Question 1, if I glue it back together with Araldite metal, will it still work?
Question 2, where can I get a replacement as I only have 1 anyhow. Tried ebay and google but no joy. I'm assuming the dealer will take the pi$$.
Question 3, any ieas why the ignition barrel is stuck? I've managed to free it up a bit with jiggling and wd40,but it still only goes as far as ignition and won't turn the starter. I'm going to try and take it out later for a look.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions
I doubt glueing it will work. Dealers are usually very expensive as you suspect, Its £200 for a key for my car! There is probably an immobiliser chip in the plastic head so you might be able to get a copy cut but you'd need to keep the broken key on the key ring. If that was your only key getting a copy might be tricky but its worth asking your local key cutting place.
As for Q3, has it got a steering lock, that might need some lubing?
Finally, we MTBers know everything but for something like this it might be worth asking on a citroen forum. I've had good car help on really abstract stuff from car forums.
Ok an update,
taken the keyfob apart and found the transponder is just a RFID chip, an induction ring around the ignition barrel activates it.
So I glued the blade back into the fob with unibond metal repair, lasted long enough to get it into the ignition then fell apart! That stuff is monkey jazz. Didn't have any epoxy so used super glue next. Seems to be ok for now, don't think it will last long though.
Finally managed to free up the barrel too, lots of lithium grease sprayed down the hole and wiggling/jiggling etc.
Works for now but still need a replacement if anyone has any ideas, will check with citroen tomorrow, whilst sitting down!
Would have suggested using graphite powder in ignition, will check on key availability at work and respond tomorrow.( I cut and programme these things for a living)
Great stuff, thanks
Cando, do you cut any others too? My Pug 406 needs a new key.
cando. ditto the above. i need one doing for a renault master ?
pretty please
New one is around 170 programmed from shitroen!
super glue now failed too but got some epoxy to try tonight
This place just down the road from me does basic replacement keys for £50 for a Citroen, though the flippy ones cost a little more.
Autotrader has loads of ads for companies doing them for around £70 mark.
Monkey... according to bookwork your key is a dealer only option or try calling Hinckley Valtone - based in Bridgwater, they should be able to supply keys but key will need to coded to vehicle through ecu
Hairychested and Sofaking what age are the vehicles in question?
Thanks all, will have a flick through the trader in the morning.
sooty, sounds like they could do it for me, bit far though for now. Thanks
Cando, will try hinckley tomorrow too.
There's an asian chap in Bradford, my Transit 54 was £70 plus extra if i wanted a remote fob.
S-reg, made in 1998, registered in Jan 1999. The key has two buttons - central lock and dead lock AFAIK.
renault master is a 51 plate
key just has one button on it

have you forsaken me?! Why have you forsaken me?!
Hairychested, according to books you should be happy to know that a key is available for the 406, it wont have the buttons for central locking as that is dealer only so you would have to actually put in the door to open, but immobiliser is fitted and programmable. We'd charge £25.
Sofaking yours is also available IIRC will have same functions as Hairy's key and same costing.
Your local key cutters should be able to do these if they have a transponder machine.
Cando, how do I contact you directly? I'm not sure I want to disclose all the details on an open forum. Email me when you can. Kris
