MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Once again, I am about to show my absolute nativity on the world of IT.
So I have found the laptop I shall buy, I also intend to add an MS Office suite to it, the 365 Personal package I think. Now it talks about subscriptions which is confusing me. What I want is to buy the software and that's that, I don't need Skype, OneNote or additional storage, I just want Office running on my PC.
So the questions. Is the personal package a sensible option? And if so, if I decide not toe renew the subscription after the included first year, what will happen?
Thanks all.
Cancel the sub, no office.
If you don't need MS look at the the open solutions.
Thank simple. OK, am I imagining it, or did this not used to be the case, didn't you just used to buy the suite and it was yours or have I made that up?
That's how it used to work, but not how it works any more.
You might be able to buy an older version that doesn't require a subscription. Or use Open Office.
Office 365 = subscription. The 'buy it outright' offering is Office 2013.
Two ways of getting it cheap; your work may offer the "HUP" programme in which case it'll cost you a tenner. Failing that, if you have an .ac.uk email address you can get the academia licence at a large discount.
If none of those apply, Libre Office is free.
You can buy the suite for keeps.

To be honest, unless you use it a lot, I would just go with one of the Open Office suites for free.
might be worth a read...

.. and if you use it a lot (i.e. for your living), I'd go with the 365 subscription to stay current.
One Note is one of the most useful apps MS have produced (yes, I've used Evernote etc. too, but I like One Note), and the storage is great to backup your docs too in case your disk goes bang - easier than remembering to plug a USB dive in every so often anyway.
Skype for Business is the 365 gateway into company LYNC systems - video, audio and collaboration with a LOT of companies. Maybe not for you, but don't write it off.
Office Mobile apps have also been handy for me on occasion
I think it's a pretty good deal myself.
OP for occasional home use its a rip off. Tons of stuff available for free. The Apple equivalents are free, you can use them (cut down versions) via a browser for free and they will read/write Microsoft files, in my opinion Pages (the Word equivalent) is better than Microsoft. Google Docs is free. Open Office is free. I would try some of these first.
I use Apple stuff on my phone, ipad and computer, all via icloud sharing I can create/read/modify docs and then export to Word if I need to share with a non Apple user. All of this is free. You can do same with Google Docs

As an aside, OneNote is now free. (And ace, I use it a lot.)

The same is true of MS Office.

Interesting stuff, thanks all.
I do need the MS package, the work being done on it will need to be used on a very temperamental school IT systems that doesn't like non-MS stuff, trust me, we've tried!
However, the wife does have a .ac.uk e-mail address so this could be an option top cut costs.
Oh, result. Here you go, then.

Office 365 will update the installed package now and again.
If I didn't get Office 365 via work, I would stick with Pages, Keynote, and Numbers. Or on Windows I'd go for Libre Office, or Google docs.
Academic discounts are well worth exploring.
