Fairly scary stuff going on, it's 2am out there now and reports of a 7.5 and Tsunami activity, hope everyone out there is taking care and probably worth a little reading up for those planning the long trips down there.
Just reading about this. Sounds like a big one.
Here's hoping the tsunami message gets through given the time, and moreover, here's hoping the message isn't really needed.
Shit, some good friends moved out there last year
A shallow one, too: Only 6km/~10km focus.
I see tsunami warnings have been issued at well.
It seems to have followed earthquake activity further along the plate boundary in Fiji, earlier today and yesterday. As the fault through NZ is a transform fault, the movement in Fiji may have put additional strain on the NZ section of the fault.
I've got friends out there at the moment who are safe, but it was fairly scary, apparently.
My sister runs a motel on west shore Napier so I hope they are going to evacuate it. It's right by the sea and flat as a witches tit.
Worrying times and does sound as though it is a bad one. Thoughts and prayers for those impacted.
I've family safe in Auckland, but friends halfway down south island, no reply to messages from them yet, I assume asleep or dealing with bigger issues...
Friends just contacted me, they are moving in land due to tsunami warning, they are safe though.
Not good at all, have been on a large no. of calls with various people. Very much in line with the Seddon quakes of 2013 except somewhat bigger. I don't think people realise how active it actually is and that there is a reasonable risk of a catastrophic quake, i know its lovely and all that but when you live with this it's sh1t scary.
John Key from here will be safely tucked up at his holiday home quite near the epicentre !
I'm nice and safe - in edinburgh !
A pretty hard reality for the locals I bet, really sad. I'm flying to Christchurch in Feb for 6 weeks so will try and incorporate some aid work into the holiday.
The main issue is the infrastructure is relatively fragile, esp, where this cluster is around Hanmer/Waiau - SH1 for example will not be open for a long time which means the only route N->S is via Nelson and then through.....Hanmer ! Or right round the West Coast so incredibly disruptive.
Loads of damage, fair bit in Wellington, I am so glad it wasn't during the day and that I no longer work on the 17th floor of a high rise !
Wellington did get shook up quite a bit, damage to a few buildings including some fairly new ones. Must have been so much worse down south.
The first quake was a monster (I think technically was 2 at the same time). Never felt one that went on for so long, well over a minute and seems to keep stepping up a gear every few seconds.
The rate and intensity of the aftershocks has been staggering as well. So much worse than the Seddon quakes a couple of years ago. Was woken by them several times the first night then had 3 while watching Arrival at the Roxy last night.
I'm just glad I live up a hill and well out the Tsunami zone. Had many friends on the flat bits of town (Island Bay, Miramar etc) that were told to evacuate and spend the night on top of a hill.
It was pretty serious, we live in Lyall Bay, Wellington. So evacuated as there was a risk of a tsunami. We headed for the nearest hill after the first big shake. We spent the night up there in our camper until the all clear.
Most offices seem shut in central Welly and we are working at home.
I think the Roxy was one of the safest places to be Pomona! I dread to think what state the trails are in up in the hills. There must be a few dig days planned.
The communications were pretty poor though at first we were told there was no tsunami risk then just to the "South Coast" which wasn't very specific to either island. Then evacuate immediately, most people waited for this last message which was about an hour after the first shake.
You guys must live near where I was , seatoun heights rd. certainly my the biggest I have heard of in wgtn and in my 16 years there. The seddoon chain was bad enough so I feel for you all, rattles the nerves. On tsunami the guidance was Amy shaking over 30 seconds it's a distinct possibilityso get moving
Some stats (bit mind blowing)
he east coast of the lower North Island has shifted west by up to five centimetres. Meanwhile, the Wellington and Kapiti regions have been shunted up to six centimetres north. The north-east tip of the South Island has moved by more than two metres and lifted almost a metre. Cape Campbell is now two metres closer to the North Island than it was before. Kaikoura has moved a metre and lifted 70-centimetres, and Hanmer Springs has jumped half a metre east.
Christchurch and Banks Peninsula are now about two centimetres further south than where they were before Monday's earthquake. Some parts of the west coast of the South Island have shifted east by up to 10-centimetres.
All this movement happened in seconds.
😯
That could have been so, so much worse.
Geeky earthquake fact: one of the recent earthquakes in Italy featured ground acceleration of 1G as it dropped, literally throwing the buildings into the air.
