Is it possible to use your android phone for apps such as Strava without being on a contract or P.A.Y.G ❓
Cheers
You wouldn't be able to look at the maps or whatever, but Strava will still record your GPS data without an internet connection. You'd just need wifi to upload it. So yes (for Strava at least).
do smart phones even turn on without a valid SIM card? I know an iPhone wouldn't, not sure about an Android phone...
My old 3GS worked without a sim on home wifi.
And my Galaxy S2 does as well.
Yes - it's fine.
I will have to take out Sim Card and give it a try (didn't think of that)
Just another quick one 😳 when you have a contract and they mention Data allowance is this the amount you can download onto your phone before being charged ❓
Sorry for asking numpty questions I am new to this android lark.
Have always had company phones (Nokia types)
I dont have a data contract but can confirm that endomondo will still work ok so long as you have wifi available somewhere for it to upload.
Of course you still need to have gps on.

On my O2 contract, if I go over my allowance they don't charge you more, they just dramatically slow down the speed of the connection. I think, anyway.

Yes. Set up my HTC Android phone exactly like that, with wifi connection only. Then you can transfer stuff from ye olde worlde phone (which won't start without a SIM).
I use various mapping apps with just wifi and mobile data off. I'd bet that it would still work with no SIM.
I always put my phone in flight mode when biking abroad so I don't get any sneaky data charges. All the GPS and mapping stuff works fine. I use pre-loaded maps on viewranger and mmtracker.

Thats my understanding of o2 as well.
They also send you a text as your about to reach your limit and one when you go through it. Both times this happened to me they arrived at the same time...
Excellent, I've an old Wildfire that I bought an extended capacity battery for as I kept killing it on bike rides. Saves me buying a new bigger battery for my new phone.
Cheers people 😀
