Right then, time for a new tablet, and I think it'll be a mini/smaller one this time round. Having had a full size version for a while, I think I'll keep that for sofa-surfing and get something smaller/lighter for travelling.

Is there anything better than a Galaxy Tab 2 seven inch version at the moment? I like the SD card slot lots, and Android's the pick of the platforms for me. Also important is light weight and good battery life.

On a related, techno-dullard question - if I buy one at the airport and then sit myself down with a wifi connection, can I simply open it up with my existing tablet account (On an old Xoom) and have all my settings and/or apps etc on there straight away? If so, is that a quick process?

TIA

Hard to improve on a Nexus 7 at the moment, for performance to price.

And yes, if your account is synced it'll let you download all the old apps in one fells swoop. Settings on the other hand, probably not.

Thanks, Cougar.

No SD card on the Nexus, though, IIRC. Call me old fashioned, but I like being able to slot in more memory as and when I need it, rather than relying on the "cloud" method of storage.

Got a galaxy tab2 7.0 with my phone upgrade and it's been faultless, quick, easy to use and big enough for web browseing, iplayer, youtube type stuff. Father in law ended up getting one to use for work as his ipad was too bulkiy and didn't let him work on spreadsheets/cad drawings

USB OTG cable and a pendrive?

I take your point, but TBH for me personally I just don't need to carry that much data around with me. Eg, I'm happy sticking a couple of albums on my phone rather than every album I've ever bought ever. So long as I've got enough video to keep me in viewing for several hours on the train, I'm pretty much sorted.

Trouble is that the Nexus 7 doesn't support OTG without rooting and stickmount.

Unless anyone knows better.

Yes I know you can get Nexus media importer without rooting, but as the name suggests, storing data from the N7 to the USB drive is more problematic.

Nice idea re the cable/drive. Will consider that.

I suppose my problem is that it's often going to be used on long haul flights, so a couple of hours isn't enough! And, as I'm a fussy old hector, I like to have all sorts of films to choose from. As such, the memory card option is rather appealing.

There's an app for it, "Nexus..." er, something. It doesn't give you the full features that rooting will, it works more like the Apple 'camera adapter' I think. Not actually tried it cos it's two quid and I'm tight (and will probably root at some point).

EDIT - Nexus Media Importer, it's called.
