MissJ and I are iPhone users but for some reason MrsJ decided to buy a Samsung. Now, she keeps complaining that her phone has “run out of memory” forcing her to delete apps. I have patiently explained that apps are generally small and more likely she has accumulated big piles of data somewhere - photos etc.  This helpful advice has not been heeded so I am wondering if there is some utility- built in or otherwise - to help identify what is filling up her phone.

Otherwise it’s the patio.

Try the device maintenance in settings.

Should help to clear out some of the crap.

Yeah, device maintenance is the first place to go to. Have a look at what is using the space up and address it from there.

In settings in Android the storage section shows you how much space is used by apps/photos/videos!

Oh and Apps are not small, 100M+ is quite typical these days for Android 🙁

Could be spammy popups on websites claiming she's run out of memory rather than truth - check via phone settings to see what the me memory status  actually is . You can set photos to sync with the cloud then remove local copies which gets rid of that concern.

The Google Files Go app can be handy for finding what is wasting space. It can also list unused apps.

Buy her an iPhone?

Cheaper than a new patio, I know this as I’ve just had a quote for mine. Definitely cheaper than divorce...

It's all the bikini photies and clips she keeps sending to me. Phone is likely keeping a backup of them.

My folks get this quite often. If you purchase a cheaper Android phone they all seem to have a reduced amount of storage as standard. If the phone takes a SD card you can set it to save apps, photos etc to the card (apart from in built apps iirc)

OK As above. Also, Astro is a good file manager app and in the tools section theres a storage analyser that will help find what's filling it up.
