Does Google automatically back up text messages etc... If so do you know how to access them?

It's not automatic I don't think. You have to enable it or install an app I believe.

If it is for new phone, there are some great transfer apps out there, that will transfer texts and more.

i use go sms and it backs up to my dropbox acount
