I've just put a new 64GB SD card in my phone (a Moto 4G) and formatted it as Internal Storage. My phone now reports 15GB of 75GB used - as I expected. However it still reports Internal and SD card storage separately below; I still need to manually move apps to the SD card; and it's still the case that most apps can't be moved - so I can move Amazon Kindle but I can't more Here maps.

Before I did this I assumed that I would simply end up with 75GB free and I wouldn't need to worry about running out of space or manually moving apps.

Not an expert on this by any means, but what version of Android is it running?
I think the latest versions will allow all apps to be stored on the SD card.

Regarding what is the point of SD card storage....
I've got 29Gb of music, videos & photos on a phone that only has 16GB of internal storage.

I have this issue too - a HTC M8 - an move all the apps across manually - and then every time it updates them - it moves it all back to the central storage, filling my phone back up! Grrr!

Adoptable Storage needs Marshmallow (Android 6) or higher. Google would suggest that the Moto 4G shipped with 5, has 6 available and is now rolling out 7.

ARGH. Hateful phone and I can't wait to be shot of mine. Currently, the most probable reason for Android system using 10GB of the 16GB internal storage is a rapidly bloating log file. Deleting about 4GB of photos resulted in system filling all that space with files I'm not allowed to touch. Solutions are:
- Root it (welcome to your new long-term project!)
- Factory reset (welcome to your new short-term project!)
- Tediously keep moving stuff to the SD card, and await the day the OS grinds to a halt.
- Buy a new flagship phone, face the same problems a year or two from now.

2 of 3 HTCs I've had have been awful. Going to try Samsung next. I've not heard great things about much, including recent iPhones; I think we're just in a bad period where companies are shitting things up trying to innovate within a bunch of solved problems.

It's on 6.0.1.

7 hasn't rolled out to my phone yet (and in another gripe it's on 1 July 2016 Android security patch level).

That's what I thought from the press coverage, but according to
https://source.android.com/devices/storage/adoptable.html "Apps can be placed on adopted storage media only when the developer has indicated support through the android:installLocation attribute".

My understanding of what it does is automatically keep the 'app bit' of the app on the internal memory for maximum speed and the 'data' bit on the SD card. Previously you had to actively tell the app if you wanted it to store it's data somewhere other than on the internal memory.

It's pretty tricky to get right and for it to be seemless to the app.

Prior this Adopted business, the rule was that an app had to be on internal storage if it's required on boot. Typically this means anything with a widget.

This is why the Nexus/Pixel phones without SD storage are actually a far better idea. Never run out of space anyway with decent memory size and most stuff on the cloud.
