I find myself with a weekend to kill in Boston soon, and it seems that the local 'merkin football team have a home game.

Seems like it would be a rather fun day out, and a bit of an immersion in to the local "culture"! 😉

Only thing is, the ticket website has it as "Sold out". Does anyone know if this really means that they've filled the stadium, or that, like rugby or cricket tickets, there are some which come avaialble nearer the time?

Just wondering if I need to keep looking or abandon hope already!

Touts outside ground?

Worth going though if you can. Was at Wembley last night. Be prepared for a corporate assault, that would leave even football feeling embarrassed. 🙂

Hey-up captain - I really struggled getting hold of tickets for the football the last time I was in the states. As far as I can tell, the majority of tickets are sold on a season basis, and any that arent are sold on a lottery basis to opposing fans. Having said that, I telephoned the hotel I was staying at a couple of weeks prior to going, and they managed to get hold of tickets for me (Jets vs Bills) without any problems - local knowledge and all that, I would imagine. Good luck.

Thanks, both.

Darcy, would prefer to avoid touts. Nasty little types!

Good point re trying the hotel, will give that a shot!

Even though I don't exactly hate the game, attending an American football match can be incredibly boring due to the number of stoppages.

Any chance you could get to a Boston Bruins (Ice Hockey, for those not in the know) game? Now that would be very exciting.

Incidentally, I don't know if local touts are worse in Boston than elsewhere, but I had very good luck getting hockey tickets outside the Montreal Canadiens' arena for a whole group for not much more than the printed price.

Patriots 5 and 1 this season so they're going well.

Then there are the cheerleaders 😆

Not always. I got into Camp Nou to watch Barçelona v Bayern Munich in '98, got a seat via a 'tout' who was 'renting' a season ticket. Was about £20, when normally a seat like that for a CL game wooduv bin a lot higher. 🙂

Touts are no different to anyone else making money off a commercial event. Supply and demand, innit? Capitalism in action...

Already looked. They're away from home that weekend.

Wherever you go, Captain, try and avoid the food. At the old Meadowlands stadium, I had, alledgedly, a 'foot long', a nacho 'n' cheeze hat, and something caled a knish. I cant say I particularly enjoyed any of them. 😯

For an even better football-based immersion in the local "culture", try to get to either a college game on the Saturday or, best of all, a local high-school game on the Friday night (just think of it as Championship / Non-league as opposed to Premiership!).

I used to go to the States a couple of times a year to watch NFL games, and on one trip we found ourselves a high-school game in Memphis - we ended up sitting with the "away" fans, and although "our" team (the Raleigh-Egypt Pharaohs) got absolutely hammered (their coach's entire offensive gameplan seemed to consist of either "Sweep Left" or "Sweep Right" 🙄 ), we had a whale of a time.

Alternatively, as barnsleymitch says, hotel concierge's usually seem to know where and how to get hold of *unobtainable* tickets. 😉

If you do get tickets I recommend watching one before hand as well or at least reading up a bit on the rules... it took me several games to really be able to appreciate what was going on but now prefer it to hockey. No idea on the tickets but it can be a lot of fun.

are you over there for work? if so, try hitting up your colleagues for a spare ticket? In Phoenix it seems about 1 in 4 people are season ticket holders so no trouble in getting hold of one if I want it.

Yep, it's for work, but a conference, so not around with colleagues.

Good point re a college game. Will check that out.

My opinion of American food is already rather low.....Once had "Sport peppers" on a hot dog in Chicago. WTF they were I have no idea, but the whole experience was vile!

Seattle has some nice seafood, though...!
