Last week I ordered a book from Amazon as a gift (for Ren's mum as per my earlier thread). I got a delivery confirmation but, it hasn't been delivered.

I got onto their live chat and basically got an automated response along the lines of "there's been a delay, try again tomorrow." Which is irritating but makes sense, they must get a lot on non-deliveries where it's been taken in by a neighbour or a family member.

Fine. I gave it a couple of days then got back onto them. I had a frankly bizarre and frustrating experience with their chat representative who clearly wasn't paying attention, but long story short they eventually reordered it.

The replacement was delivered this morning, except... can you seen where this is going yet? It hasn't, again. So, now what? I suppose I'm back onto the Live Chat just to get it refunded, but that's a pain in the arse as what I really want is the bloody book posted. Anyone have any bright ideas?

Got an amazon package the other week. It was a book I ordered. Except it wasn't. It was an empty package with the Amazon order slip in it. On the website it clearly shows it hasn't shipped yet.
I'm guessing they are having massive drop shipping problems.

Waterstones or, better, an indy bookshop; Amazon don't need or deserve anyone's money but independents do.

I'm having similar problems at the moment with a replacement charging cable for an old macbook. Prime delivery order placed last Thursday. Originally shown as being on the way but from Friday onwards just get updates on the website saying there has been a problem, they hope to have it dispatched the next working day.

If I had to put money on it, I'd go with it being "hidden" somewhere by the delivery driver.

It's beautifully inconsistent. Sometimes a parcel is left in plain site right on our door step, occasionally it's been fiendishly hidden.

Yeah. It's unlikely to have been 'borrowed,' she lives on a quiet estate.

Is there an Amazon locker you can get it sent to nearby?
Seems more likely to be delivered to one of those.
We had a weird one the other week. Next door neighbour ordered a book. Got delivery confirmation with a picture of the package in our back garden. 30 metres from their front door. When we got home from work no sign of any package. So some driver has opened our gate and wandered round the side of house, down the steps, across the patio, to the opposite side from the neighbour who placed the order. Photographed the package next to our patio doors. Then picked it up and walked off with it….

Update, if anyone cares.

I ordered the book, delivery tracking said "handed to resident" but it never arrived.
Spoke to them by Web Chat, they reordered it. Delivery tracking said "handed to resident" but it never arrived.
Spoke to them by Web Chat again, they reordered it again. Delivery tracking said "handed to resident" but it never arrived. Again. WTF?

I've got them to refund it. I'm going to try Hive as recommended above.

Thanks, I'll add this to the reasons to not use Amazon.

Also- hadn't heard of Hive, I'll give it a go! Thanks!

Were you even typing to a real person?

@Cougar - didn't you get a "your parcel is 6 stops away" message/email? I can basically track the van/driver by that link and normally see it passing along the road behind just before it gets here.

It's on the app I think. Didn't think to look as it wasn't coming to me, that would probably have been a good idea.

Sounds more like an address cock-up. Someone with a similar address is busy posting on whatever forum they use about who keeps sending them the same book over and over again.

It does, but how? I copied and pasted the address people have been using on the other thread and I've double-checked with her that it's correct.

My Garmin Instinct arrived similarly, an empty box. Speaking to them, it seems quite common, folk robbing stuff and sending an empty box back, obviously their staff operate so tight timescale wise that they don't even check to see if the stuff is actually in the box.

Some right thieving bastards about.

Thanks for the Hive shout, never seen them before.

You can set a pin to show your exact location on a map. I had to do this to stop stuff being put in someone else's blue bin at the other end of the road.

On the app.....Your Account/Your addresses/Add delivery instructions

You can also leave notes along the lines of safe place etc. These get flagged to the delivery guy on route.

I've had this with Amazon before, parents ordered a book to be delivered to my house and it took a few attempts before it arrived. Each time the tracking would say it was delivered just before the amazon driver showed up and dropped something else for my neighbour (not my package). I suspect that the package might have looked like it contained a phone and was nicked by the delivery driver.

A gift I ordered last year was "delivered" stuffed into the rafters of my porch, which I found a few days later after ordering another one.

They're doing passcodes for high value items now which I assume is to cut down on drivers stealing parcels (or recipients claiming non delivery).

Never had an issue with Amazon, even now. Ebay, however... item posted from a company with tracking number, still showing as 'on route' two weeks later. Then again, it could be coming from China even though carefully checking the seller's address !

Hive is great. You get to choose which local book shop to support with their profits.
Often just a few quid more than Amazon, but free delivery and often a voucher for 5-10% off. Best feeling though is that you're not supporting Bezos.

its more than likely that the driver "doorstepped" it. what they do is go up the door, scan the package and mark as delivered to resident and then leave it on the doorstep in plain view. this s probably because the book was packed into a parcel or envelope that's too big for the letterbox and the driver couldn't be bothered to wait around for someone to open the door. an amazon driver is expected to do at least 20 drops per hour so that gives 3 minutes per drop. they're paid to do a 9 hour route. it's peak period at amazon now so each driver on average (or at least the self-employed drivers not in the grey amazon vans) will have well over 300 parcels and will be expected to hit anything between 160-180 drops.
the GPS on their delivery devices doesn't let them scan a parcel until they're at the location so unless amazon have got the GPS wrong then it has been dumped n the doorstep and someones seen it and nabbed it.
under the current covid guidelines amazon don't allow their drivers to leave parcels with neighbours and they're not allowed to leave parcels in a safe place unless its been specified by the customer.
there's a process they need to follow if the customer isn't available but it involves texting and phoning the customer and its time consuming so many amazon drivers try to bypass it by doorstepping

That being the case, it should have been on the doorstep, no?

Jo lives on a suburban cul-de-sac, it's highly unlikely that it would've been stolen by an opportunist once, let alone three times on the bounce.

an amazon driver is expected to

Yeah, I have a friend who's an Amazon driver and I was bouncing this off him. His advice after three was "go somewhere else."

logic would suggest yes, but given that your friend lives in a quite cul-de-sac then i imagine Amazon have got the GPS location wrong on the address and its been delivered at the wrong address. i cant imagine the driver nabbing it unless he suspected it to be a high value item. amazon are trying to tackle this by using a 6 digit security code they give to the customer for high value items. the driver then has to input this code into the device before the item can be marked as delivered. they also do random van inspection for any drivers who return to depot. they know what each driver has and whats been delivered and not delivered.

i did 6 months working for them last year and although the money can be good, they treat drivers like s**t.

His advice after three was “go somewhere else.”

i would have tried a different address first. drivers tend to do the same patch for at least 6 weeks before they get shifted to another area. you probably got the same idiot driver doing the same thing each time
