Are there any alternative services that can trigger an alert on a mobile device via an API call?
I have some Arduino code as part of some smart home stuff that I'd like to use to pop up an alert on a couple of Android devices.
Works almost perfectly on IFTTT, except the lag between hitting the API and the notification can be anything from about 5s to about 5 minutes. I need it to be reliably right at the low end of this!
IFTTT is lovely and simple (just an empty get request) but just not fast enough for this purpose.
Happy to pay a small amount for a subscription if needed.
Ta!
Tried Telegram? You can programatically send messages as a Telegram message via simple API call (or via curl), either to a single user or to a group.
I built my own video doorbell which sends me a picture via telegram whenever someone presses the doorbell - message with picture usually arrives within 5-10 seconds.
Pushover would be another option - although I found messages took a little longer to arrive.
Long time no speak BTW 🙂
Hey! Good to see you're still around! Hope you're well?
I had no idea Telegram could do that, sounds perfect! Your use case is pretty similar to mine tbh. It's part of a doorbell system. We've an old house with a bell operated by a pull handle, and a garden that isn't really connected to the house, so trying to build something that simply alerts when the handle is pulled. The mechanics are sorted, the electronics are fine, it's just finding a good way of alerting on devices.
I'll get googling now!
Thanks again 🙂
I'm still about - have phases on and off the bike, just like with cars 😉
Telegram has a really well documented API, and seems to work well. Our use case is similar - we have a dog that likes to chase couriers around the garden, so we have a a really hacked together setup with a Honeywell wireless doorbell on the gate, and a SDR dongle on a low powered PC in the house.
When the doorbell is pressed, the bell rings in the house, the SDR dongle picks up the event from the radio 'ping', runs FFMPEG to grab a still from a camera and sends it to me as a Telegram message 🙂
I have Telegram on my phone, my van sends me a message if it gets too hot.
But mostly I get annoying notifications telling me a new user has joined Telegram - any idea how to switch off?
Would Tasker work?

You can turn the 'event' off in settings, Notifications and Sounds for 'Contact joined Telegram'
I might be wrong but I think that if you pay for IFTTT then the response times are quicker.
I use it with pushbullet and it's pretty much instantaneous as far as I can tell.
Thanks for the other suggestions!
Telegram worked perfectly. My 8 year old has been testing it by constantly triggering the button on my test setup and giggling away 😀 My only concern is that nothing that works this well is free forever.
I can use a civil of the same code for my 'The bloody freezer's stopped working in the garage again' alarm as well, double ace.
I had considered paying for IFTTT, but I hadn't really found any reports that the paid version is any quicker.
