What is a good alternative... I'd like to have a calender feature on there though...

No - something spelt very similarly seems popular though.

thunderbird is excellent, much faster than outlook.

lol, but I stick with what I said. Set up the pop-mail checking on GMail, and you're not tied to a single machine, it's got a calendar, there are plugins for tasks...

Of course, all your data is in Google's hands, I'm not personally too bothered but then I'm not dealing with commercial / protected data.

+1 Thunderbird, you can even "theme" it to look like it has wood panels (or outlook)

maybe I'll give Thunderbird a go..
I have gmail, but want to have something on my laptop.

Correct me if i am wrong but you dont install gmail onto your machine like Thunderbird. Its not a programe but rather an online resource.

Thunderbird does not give you an eamil address and so you would use Thunderbird with Gmail.

Right?

correct, you can get to your gmail through thunderbird the same as i get to my gmail on my smart phone. ๐Ÿ™‚
