I'm looking to sell my car, which is mint apart from the front wheels (the laquer has started to bubble up on some spokes, and there's a minor kerb scuff on one).
Does anyone know how much alloy refurbishment costs? (wondering how much to knock off when it comes to haggling over price of car).
TIA
p.s. phoned a couple of places earlier today, but prices ranged from £40 to £110.
I'm looking at getting my 18" AMG alloys done. I've been quoted £340 for all 4. Price includes removing and replacing tyres. Where are you?
Where are you? If you are in the nw Proclean in prescot are excellent and cheap.
I'm in Sheffield, but I've got a member of the MX5 owners club coming up from Windsor to look at the car. If I have to, I reckon knocking off £75 per wheel might be fair(?)
My father in law just got his Mondeo wheels redone for £40 a wheel. I can ask him where he got it done, he lives in Edwinstowe near Worksop.
Our kid works at Audi in Macclesfield and they use - http://www.prestigewheels.co.uk/index.html
Nationwide service and mobile too
If you decide to knock anything off I'd wait and see if it was going to be a deal clincher/breaker and start at the £40 a wheel mark, seeing as though thats what you've been quoted as bottom price, but let the buyer bring it up and let the buyer do all the work in getting money off rather than just offering. If you offered me £75 a wheel straight away I'd then expect to get a little more with a bit of effort and teeth sucking.
£75/wheel sounds like too much to me to knock off.
You can get them re-furbed for about £40/wheel, which is more of a cosmetic clean-up than a full repair.
If you want them properly stripping & re-doing then that will likely be about £300 for all four.
What car is it? How old? Will it make that much difference to resale?
I'd be tempted to either get the wheels touched up by a mobile repair person or just offer £80 off the price of the car, especially if it's only 2 wheels that need sorting.
And as Carlos says - don't go straight in with £75/wheel. If they are at the point of interest that they are haggling over the condition of the wheels, then I'd just say that you've have repair quotes for £40/wheel so can either take that off the cost of the car or get the repairs done before they collect.
Thanks for the advice. As far as 'the haggle' goes, if it does come down to the wheels being a deal breaker, I'll def. aim to only knock £40 per wheel off. TBH, I don't think it'd be a problem with a 'normal' buyer, because the blistering etc. really is very minor - and the local Mazda dealer reckons just touching them up would be fine.
The 'problem' is that I've got a fella from the MX5 owners club very interested, and as a member of the OC myself, I know what fussy bu**ers some members can be. The fella has asked me for details of any known 'faults', so he can make his mind up whether to come up from Windsor. From a couple of other people that have contacted me, I think the blistering of the alloys is one of the known faults that people have read about on the Mk3 MX5's (the original wheels on the car were replaced under warranty by Mazda 'cos of this problem).
FWIW, the car is a 4 year old 2.0i Sport MX5. The car is low mileage and extremely good nick for it's age, and it's priced very realistically & competitively. So, at the end of the day, if this fella is expecting the car to be 100% like an absolutely brand new car and comes in with a daft offer, he can go and stump up the extra 9 or 10k for a new one! (er..do I sound like I'm getting peed off with timewasters?!..ahem)
fattatlasses - I used to have a Mk3 2.0 sport. The alloys are renound for corroding.
I got mine done under warranty just out of warranty. Loads of people have had multiple sets replaced by Mazda under warranty even out of the standard 3 year period and having had them replaced before.
Do bit of searching on the official Maxda MX5 forum loads of stuff on there http://www.mx-5.com/Forum/Room/?roomId=11
I think you have to be persistant but does work.
Cheers FunkyDunc. I'd managed to squeeze an extra years warranty out of the mazda dealer that I bought it off (expires today), so tried mazda to see if they'd replace or refurb. Got blown out, 'cos I'd had the last big service done by local MX5 independant, not main dealer.
If I was keeping the car, I'd challenge this, but ain't got the time at the mo.
I've got a Polo GTI - same problem, was told £45 a wheel to acid clean them won't be perfect but will look better to sell as to buy new alloys was about a grand 😯

Wheels on my Ibiza are the same and have been quoted £300 for full refurb. I had a look at some of the ones that the bloke had just done for an Audi and they looked absolutely fantastic. Just a lot of cash to stump up for some shiny wheels.
I enquired at Seat about new wheels and was told £220/wheel!! For a 16" rim. I thought he was joking. He wasn't. So I asked if that included tyres. It didn't!

as above - had the BBS's on our Polo gti done at prestige wheels - cost £75 a corner, but to do them properly the rim is split from the centres and then sealed and bolted back together. they came back looking great and have remained so.
Its an investment I need to do, I got told by my ex husband they're like that cos I don't clean it enough?
He may just have been being a git.... there is a reason he's my ex but is that true?

what year gti? if it's the same as ours circa 2000 - 2002 then they're all the same. BBS alloys are flippin expensive and well known for not being hard wearing. the diamond cut finish on the outer edge is the main culprit. water sits in the recess between the centre and the outer and it gets under the lacquer. when you get them re-done they'll powdercoat the inners and outers, much harder wearing.
Its a 'Y' reg so 1999???? but only got 75k on it so worth the investment I think
M6TTF - His names Mike and works in/runs (don't know which) valeting.
