I always find people who are that certain about things really disturbing. Could be religion, guns, government conspiracies or whatever but their zeal is very worrying. They're motivated to do stuff and most people aren't.

Their gun death rate is over 40 times higher than ours, but our rape rate is only 1 rape per 100,000 people higher than theirs (I've used rape because he used the Delhi rape as an example).

A while back I spent a bit of time explaining to a US forum that

a) gun crime went up after the bans came in because there were more possession offences- previous legal firearms became criminal to possess. It wasn't because they were being used more and

b) UK gun crime stats include airguns and replicas.

They were quite receptive actually, I thought I was wasting my time.

OTOH, I don't think the UK in general's in a great position to criticise, considering how hysterical we are about our own crime rates, and how completely divorced our fear of crime is from the reality of crime. But hey.

Ive heard this UK violent crime is higher than USA before, i was a bit surprised so i looked into it. In the UK "harassment without injury" is a violent crime and reported as such. In the USA, that doesn't register as a crime at all. Sexual harassment counts as a violent crime in the uk, yet in the states only forcible rape counts as violent crime. Even plain old harassment is classed as a violent crime in the UK, but but not in the USA.

I don't think the UK in general's in a great position to criticise

That's not really the point though, is it? It's basically the same argument Jones was using repeatedly, right up the ad hominem mockery at the end: Piers asks how many people are killed with guns, Jones responds by asking how many people are killed by sharks. Now I don't know, shark crime may be at an all-time high, but it's a non sequitur. Just because Y might be bad doesn't mean we should ignore X.
