[Closed] Adobe Flash...should I care?

I get prompted to update Flash periodically and today's notification mentioned its going to be "End of life" on Dec 31st.

Should I care about this? Do any browsers still use Flash or is it safe to uninstall now.

The only recent times I specifically remember having to enable Flash is for watching Channel 4 TV...

Personally haven’t had it installed or noticed it’s absence for many years!

Its pretty much redundant nowadays. Youtube doesn't use it any more any many browsers are starting to block it.

Long past time it should have been put out of its, and everyone else’s misery!
It’s still used by quite a few Japanese web sites who serve the manga/animé communities, and have a lot of legacy stuff, so they’re highly resistant to change.
I only know this because a mate torrents loads of obscure animé, so he has Flash solely for that purpose.
I stopped using it years ago, I have Chrome on my Mac Mini for the increasingly rare occasion where Flash is required, but I’m struggling to remember the last time that happened.
I used to get nagged to install Flash back when I had a Nokia N95 ‘smart phone’, the irony being that there never was a mobile version of Flash that worked.
And it really was a shitty phone, too, performed badly at everything it was supposed to do. 🤬

I was under the impression that if you have it you should keep it up to date but you probably don't need it at all. I play the occasional flash game and they work fine in edge browser (the only thing I use it for). Just gives a little 'are you sure?' prompt. I wouldn't have it in my day to day browser

@CountZero

Loved my Nokia N95. Still have it (and the box) and I think it looks cool. Only stopped using it as the '0' button stopped working

Chrome and Edge will be dropping Flash support in updates before the end of the year, I’m sure.

Wasted many months developing stuff in Flash back in the day. Awful security wormhole of a thing that was once very useful… but no more.

This.

I uninstalled it like a decade ago and haven't looked back. Chrome supports in natively - so you don't need the standalone copy installed at all anyway - but actively blocks it unless you specifically enable it in Settings. It's very rare to see Flash-based websites these days, about the only time I encounter it is either internal systems or sites that look like they've been migrated from Geocities.

While you're there, burn Java to the ground as well.

Flash hasn't really had any support for many years. As above, Chrome doesn't even enable it by default any more. Apple put the first nails in the coffin when they released the iPad a decade ago. I did see it used on a local government website the other day, but that doesn't really surprise me, I dare say the NHS are still using Windows XP too.

Ditched it years ago. Didn’t bother with sites that insisted on it.

As I said earlier, I only really noticed Flash being needed on the Channel 4 website (when watching F1)...I always had to enable Flash to watch the program. Without any F1, I've not had reason to watch C4.

So, is it just me who got those prompts?
I generally use Firefox rather than Chrome (but will switch if needed)

An update to this, Adobe are not only not supporting Flash any longer, they’re actively encouraging users to remove Flash from any computers where it’s installed, and will be taking steps to prevent Flash from functioning after December 31.

I honestly wasn’t at all impressed with mine. The camera was rubbish, it wouldn’t focus on anything, I couldn’t take photos of my bike leaning against a tree ten feet away, or a 100’ long sailing ship in Bristol docks - in fact I think I only ever successfully took about ten photos the whole time I had it! The battery life was woeful, if I was listening to music it would die after two or three hours, the GPS was poorly executed, it wouldn’t work if the phone was closed, only when the thing was slid open so the keypad was showing; I actually bought a GPS module to use via BT. Even then the screen was so small it was difficult to see what was going on.
As for using the Internet, the continual demands for Flash to be installed, and which wouldn’t work anyway drove me nut.
When I bought my first iPhone, a 3G, it was a revelation, everything that it was supposed to do actually worked! And I didn’t need a stupid little joystick thing to scroll around the screen either.
It was a nice idea, but very poorly executed.
Of course, it’s always possible I had a duff example, but the GPS issue was well known at the time.
