Stuck a new 1TB hdd in my laptop as a data drive to supplement the SSD.

The new drive shows in BIOS but is not showing at all in Windows disk management.  I thought the reason it wasn't showing in Explorer was because it wasn't formatted... but it's not visible at all in disk management.

WTF am I doing wrong?!  I've taken it out and put it back in again to no avail.  There used to be a 500gb drive in the same sata slot which worked fine.  the new drive directly replaced that 500gb drive.  grrrr.

I would check the BIOS settings regarding boot disks etc.

Just to double check, is it showing in the lower pane of the disk management window?

The upper part won't show new disks until you've set them up and assigned drive letters.

If it's definitely not there, try swapping the sata cable with a drive you know is working and see if that makes any difference.

Thanks folk.

Forgot to try disk management as admin, will do that. It's currently not showing at all in either top or bottom pane in disk management.

RESOLVED

Windows did a small update between shutdowns just now and it's appeared in disk management.  Random, but sorted.

Thanks for suggestions folks.

Possibly due to msiexec flagging that a reboot was required before being able install  anything else. In this case the driver for the HDD.  it’s usually less intransigent  than that.
