Further to avalanchequeen's thread, which actor do you think is vastly overated?

For me it's Sean Bean, Clive Owen and RIcky Gervais; all of which are "the emperors new clothes" - just because someone says they're good ...doesn't actually make them good!

Ricky Gervais is fantastic, Cruise has played extremely well in loads of roles and have enjoyed all his films ( vanilla sky very weird tho )

Nick Cage OTH, i agree with.

Like Tom Hanks, de niro and morgan freeman. Travolta is quite good as well, and Tim robbins in Shawshank redemption was ace.

Sean Bean? He's just a standard B movie leading man isn't he? Can't see what's objectionable there.

Leonardo Dicaprio is a good actor I guess, but way too short to be a leading man. You wouldn't find pygmies like Dicaprio headlining films in the good old days of Holywood.

Tom Cruise is also a gnome, of course, but I don't know anyone who rates him as an actor.

I do have delusions of being able to 'act', i haven't been in anything for 25yrs (school play)..

How hard can it be??

I reckon i could be great though 😉

Cage, Cruise are the worst, Craig maybe as well. Cruise is dreadful though, I mean really. Only done 1 film where I didn't want to kill him.

Bean and Owen may not be great actors but have great presence.

Gervais is a rubbish actor but plays himself very well.

Sam Worthington (Avatar, Clash of the Titans, Terminator: Salvation): To steal a line from Dennis Pennis, when referring to Hugh Grant, "I thought someone had thrown a wooden chair onto the stage".

How this guy became a professional actor I really don't know.

Even in Blade Runner?

Cruise isn't an actor, he's a film star. Most of his films are just vehicles to make him look good.

Nic Cage just makes loads of rubbish films.

Definitely! For me he ruins every film he's in. Soo overrated.

Worst for me are the overactors:
Think Al Pacino in Devil's Advocate, Nicolas Cage, John Malcovic, Alan Rickman etc. Stick to the stage Luvvies!

Sorry, all those mentioned pale into insignificance in the shadow of the most wooden actor alive...

Jeff Goldblum.

The contrast between him and the fabulous Vincent D'Onofrio in 'Criminal Intent' is just mindblowing. How the producers let the Goldblum stump anywhere near the show is mindboggling.

I have just thrown out some undefined rotting mass from the back of my fridge that had a more endearing character and captivating personality than poor old Jeff. He kinda suited 'The Fly' as his facial expression (or lack thereof) and delivery is close to that of a diptera.

Nicolas Cage (ruins pretty much every film he's in apart from Kick Ass), Clive Owen, Sean Connery.

David Caruso's ace, he's like a modern day Shatner. I guess you could say he's...

Clint Eastwood
Quentin Tarantino
Dwayne Johnson (The Rock)
there's loads, too many to mention
oh and that bunch of US comedy actors, who to be fair suffer because of the films they're in...
Vince Vaughn
Owen Wilson
Paul Rudd
Jack Black
Ben Stiller
Luke Wilson
Steve Carell

Would it be harsh to say that all of the actors in the new BBC series: White Van Man?

In reality they are struggling actors who'll take any work that comes their way, duff script or not!

In truth, the crass White Van Man script is a product of an extremely marrowminded discriminatory twunt who was considered by someone in the BBC to be a creative talent!

It really pisses me off to think we all pay good money for such banality!

I'm so glad to have found others who think Tom Hanks is shit.... Seriously this man can't act. He is utterly bobbins in everything he has been in and I can't watch any films of his anymore as they make me want to cry (in a bad way). Everyone else I know thinks he's great, I was beginning to think it was just me. Thank You

+1

Shows that a good script and a good director is what makes a film watchable. A lot of actors named here have been good in one or two films. Blame the producers and the great unwashed cinema-going public for shit films.

Can't stand Nicole Kidman or Russell Crow. Oh and while i'm on about Russell's how the **** has Russell Brand got into acting he sucks imo as a comedian and even more so as an actor.

The thing with Nic Cage is, he's basically in one of two modes.

You've got 'regular' Cage, who's a tedious by-the-numbers actor who spends the entire movie wondering if he's left the gas on. However, you've also got 'batshit insane' Cage who's actually really rather entertaining.

Is it just me that doesn't get Orlando Bloom, incidentally? I just find him weary and dull.

I'm running out of patience with "Comedy" actors as well. I've always found Gervais to be about as funny as hemorrhoids, and every time I see Seth Rogan on screen I wish someone would invent slap-o-vision (though to be fair, I've not seen 'Paul' yet).

I think Raising Arizona is a good example of this. I though this film was fantastic and couldn't imagine anyone else playing that role.

Agree generally though about Nicolas Cage, very hit and miss.

John travolta just gets on my nerves. Pulp Fiction would have been as good without him - that part was so well written.

Tom Cruise is actually a very good actor - he just gets up people's noses because he specialises in playing cocky, arogant, alpha male types (this is taken to its logical conclusion with his part in Magnolia).

As for the over actors - this is not always their fault. Al Pacino is more than capable of giving a subtle performance (see Godfather 1 and 2) - it's just that after Scarface every director decided they wanted "crazy Al",all the downplayed takes probably get left on the cutting room floor. I expect he's bored of it too.

Charlie from Casualty doesn't look anyone in the eye - I can't work out if he is a good actor playing someone who can't look anyone in the eye, or a bad actor who can't look anyone in the eye

Agree about Pacino - but when was the last time he was actually watchable? Hmm. Carlito's Way, I guess.
Trouble is Devil Advocate made me never want to watch him again!

I can't work out if he is a good actor playing someone who can't look anyone in the eye, or a bad actor who can't look anyone in the eye

Reminds me of the bloke who played Terry Duckworth in Corrie. (Yeah, what was I doing watching Corrie?) He always used to look at people's mouths when they were talking. He was utterly hopeless.

he is good in Insomnia - seems to be making less films these days. i know he made another film with DeNiro recently (not Heat) - reviews were so bad that I can't bare to watch it

agree Davil's Advocate is awful, and Carlito's way is completly brills

Jesus wept.
Is this a competition to see who can come up with the most controversial selection?

On a thread about actors who can't act the STW massive have managed to list:

Al Pacino
Clint Eastwood
Leo DiCaprio
Christopher Walken
Anthony Hopkins
Tom Hanks
Jeff Bridges
John Malcovich

This place baffles me at times.

Thought Cage was good in Kickass, but he was kind of playing Cage.

I quite like Matt Damon post-Bourne just seen the Adjustment Bureau and he's good in that, liked Green Zone as well (which is the only film I've enjoyed Russell Crowe in incidentally)

DiCaprio is good in Body of Lies and The Departed.

+1 for Pacino in Insomnia
