Please could someone recommend me some compact active monitors for DJing at home? They might get used for a bit of production (when i can get my arse in gear) and possibly taken out to shitty places that don't have monitors.
Probably want to spend around £300, but if i can get something substantially better for not much more i'll happily pay extra.
Cheers
I used to use JBL Control 5s, very robust if you are taking them out and about, I've also got two different sets at work Yamaha MSP3s and Edirol MA-150's both pretty good for dance or bass heavy music production, all quite old now.
EDIT: I caveat that after 20+ years old dj-ing that my ears probably aren't that reliable 😉
These are good.

I would go for nearfield monitors if producing, these are around your price range, then buy some half decent cables for them.

I picked up a pair of Fostex PM1's second hand for under a hundred quid a few years ago, so worth checking second hand from a trusted source. OK they aren't Adams, but not bad for the cash...
If you can stretch your budget, make sure you get a 6" cone. Makes so much difference to being able to hear whats going on in your low end.

I think I'll only be able to go upto a 6" cone max due to space limitations.
TBH it doesn't matter what Monitors you buy if you don't put in a bit of room treatment they'll be as much use as a boombox anyway.
If you can't afford a bit of room treatment then get some AKG 701's for mixing and some powered PA speakers for carting about to gigs.
Of course that relates to mixing/production on them for just blasting about DJ'ing any of the Above, KRK's have a good punch for bass heavy music.
Behringer Truths, KRK RP5's, M-Audio BX8's (although the manufacturer just got sold off, not sure if that's a good thing long term) Fostex PM05, Mackie MR5's.
None of them are brilliant, but they will all do the job to a fashion for the money.
mickyfinn, are you micky finn?
Go used and bring Genelec into the equation? Always lots about on eBay.
Back in the day... We used to put thick curtains over the walls of our studio room to stop sound reflections. Worked extremely well, made the tops sound a lot more precise.
If your speakers are going to be put in corners, then a front facing port hole will help keep the boominess of the speaker down.
Easy enough to make bass traps with some ply, rockwool and cara fabric. Personally I'd be looking at some second hand Mackie or Genelecs for that kind of money, entry level KRKs are garbage IMO.
Mackie SRM 150s are surprisingly useful and sound pretty good, ultra portable too
The Berhinger alikes aren't too bad for £125
