We will be in touch
23yo son of a friend is moving to Bristol from N Scotland to do a post grad wildlife photography course. He is finding it impossible to find any accommodation. (Not uncommon I know!)
He’s a really good lad - we’ve known him all his life, & he’s just been working for me.
Does anyone have any suggestions??
Cheers
Is looking for an entire flat or just a room? How long for?
Well snap. Son1 has been to Bristol today hunting down accommodation. The letting agents have never ever seen things so bad. Apparently the university are sending students to Weston Supermare. We may be sorted, will now tomorrow. I can drop some hints and leads.
Can't help on place to live but I live just outside Weston and personally wouldn't advise sending any UNI students here, it would be nothing like living the student life in the city which I assume is also part of the appeal of going to university.
I'd heard the uni were also sending some students to the Bath uni accommodation as they've got space
That’s crazy. All they’ve built here the last few years has been student halls.
Slightly more helpfully: You could try joining some local FB groups (e.g BS3 Connect & BS4 Connect) and seeing if anyone has a spare room now that their teenager has gone to uni.
Sorry I have no great ideas. I work for the Uni of Bristol and we are taking far more first years than usual due to the A level results so I think there are more students in private accom this year. The issue of accommodation for post grads is always tough anyway, sorry.
The wildlife film making course I presume is UWE at various city campuses so they might want to use a bike and look at the suburbs.
Airbnb can be useful for short term accom, with flexible dates search etc. as it might be easier to find somewhere being here and being able to call agents and view places as soon as they come available. Depends a bit on what he's looking for (shared or not, furnished or not, budget).
Cheers for those suggestions
Can't believe there's a shortage of accommodation - every other office block in the city centre seems to have been converted into student accommodation. Have you looked at the Spare Room website? Also useful to know which campus he will be studying at as UWE have campuses in 3 different areas.
If it's MA in Wildlife Filmmaking then that will mainly be Bower Ashton campus in the South(ish) West of the city.
And yep student accommodation is really squeezed lately. Massive A level grade inflation (slow clap for Gavin Williamson) meant that uni's (which made conditional offers pre-COVID last year) took a lot more students than they were expecting last year. And they all need to be housed again this year...
